Aave is a decentralized finance protocol that enables users to lend and borrow cryptocurrencies. Lenders deposit digital assets into liquidity pools to earn interest, while borrowers can use their crypto holdings as collateral to access funds, including through flash loans, which must be repaid within the same transaction.
Originally launched as ETHLend in November 2017, the project was rebranded to Aave in September 2018. The name, meaning "ghost" in Finnish, reflects the platform's expanded scope beyond Ether lending. The AAVE token serves dual purposes: it offers holders reduced fees on the platform and functions as a governance token, giving owners influence over the protocol's future development. The project was founded by Stani Kulechov, who sought to address the lack of lending applications on Ethereum.
Aave supports borrowing and lending across approximately 20 cryptocurrencies, providing users with a wide range of options. Borrowers can switch between fixed and variable interest rates, offering flexibility depending on market conditions. The platform gained prominence in the DeFi space during the summer of 2020, ranking among the largest projects by total value locked. A token swap was announced in July 2020, converting existing tokens at a 1:100 ratio to create a total supply of 16 million AAVE. AAVE tokens are designed to be deflationary, with burning occurring when the protocol collects fees.
