Abelian is a Layer 1 blockchain designed to combine quantum resistance with privacy preservation. Its cryptographic systems are intended to defend against potential attacks from future quantum computers. The project’s native token, ABEL, offers multiple levels of privacy, ranging from pseudonymity, similar to Bitcoin, to full privacy, which conceals sender and receiver addresses as well as transaction amounts. An intermediate level of accountability allows users to share trapdoor information with a third party while maintaining full privacy from the public.
The project’s security and privacy features are mathematically proven, based on lattice-based cryptosystems that incorporate CRYSTALS-Dilithium and Kyber. These primitives were selected by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as part of the first batch of post-quantum cryptographic standards. The blockchain uses linkable ring signatures and supports a Proof-of-Work (POW) mechanism compatible with Ethereum 1.0, which could allow existing Ethereum mining hardware to be repurposed for mining ABEL.
Beyond its own network, Abelian aims to extend quantum-safe protections to other blockchains, including EVM-compatible systems, through its lattice-based zero-knowledge proof methods. This is intended to safeguard digital assets on other networks against quantum attacks.
