Aptos is a Layer 1 Proof-of-Stake blockchain employing the Move smart contract programming language, a Rust-based language originally developed by Meta's Diem blockchain engineers. The platform envisions a blockchain bringing mainstream adoption to web3 while empowering a DApps ecosystem solving real-world user problems. Through parallel execution, the PoS blockchain achieves a theoretical transaction throughput exceeding 150,000 transactions per second. In March 2022, Aptos raised million in a seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz, followed by another million Series A round in July with participation from Dragonfly, Apollo Global, Franklin Templeton, Animoca, and Jump Crypto. Binance Labs added an undisclosed strategic investment in Aptos shortly after. The mainnet launched on October 18, 2022, with genesis occurring on October 12, 2022.
Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, both former Meta employees, co-founded Aptos. Shaikh currently serves as CEO, bringing years of multinational financial services and blockchain experience with expertise in scaling products and venture capital markets. Ching, the CTO, previously worked as a principal software engineer at Meta. Both co-developed the Diem blockchain project at Meta before establishing Aptos Labs when Diem discontinued in January 2022. The Aptos team includes additional researchers, designers, and engineers from the Diem project.
Aptos can process over 150,000 transactions per second compared to Ethereum's 12-15 tps. This capability emerges from a parallel execution engine using a byzantine fault-tolerant PoS consensus mechanism where transactions process simultaneously rather than sequentially, preventing single failures from halting the entire chain. Failed transactions get re-executed or aborted through software transactional memory libraries detecting conflicts. Move, Aptos' smart contract language, offers advantages over Solidity including easily verifiable blockchain commands, private key modification, and modular design. Upgradeability, configurability, and horizontal throughput scalability through native sharding provide improved user experiences and new use cases.
APT is the native Aptos blockchain currency with a 1 billion initial total supply and 130 million circulating supply at writing. Token distribution comprises Community (51.02%), Core Contributors (19%), Foundation (16.50%), and Investors (13.48%). Community allocation maintains 80% held by the Aptos Foundation and remaining holdings by Aptos Labs for community growth and foundation initiatives, unlocking monthly over ten years. Investors and core contributors follow a four-year vesting schedule from mainnet launch. The team announced a 20 million APT token airdrop to early testnet users on October 19, 2022.

Aptos employs two consensus protocols: Proof-of-Stake and AptosBFT. Derived from DiemBFT, AptosBFT relies on a custom consensus algorithm based on the HotStuff protocol, which analyzes on-chain state and automatically adjusts leader rotations for non-responsive validators without human intervention. Byzantine Fault-Tolerant networks continue operating normally despite some members going offline or turning malicious.
The APT token trades on multiple exchanges including Binance, Huobi, KuCoin, Coinbase, and others.
