Astar is a web3 collective focused on creating products that bring users onchain and deliver lasting value for ASTR. It functions as a multi-chain ecosystem that aligns products and contributors through a shared economic and governance structure. The core of this system is Astar Network, which provides the foundation for governance, security, and economic coordination. Astar supports a variety of products and integrations aimed at fostering real onchain usage and sustainable economic activity. The development of these products is guided by the Astar Stack, a unified framework that converts blockchain infrastructure and finance into secure, user-friendly applications consistent with Astar's economic objectives. ASTR serves as the ecosystem's economic and governance token, linking network activity, product growth, and long-term value creation.
Astar Network was established in 2019 by Sota Watanabe, a blockchain innovator recognized in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia in 2022. He holds an economics degree from Keio University in Japan. His career includes roles as a marketing specialist at Chronicled, an IT company in San Francisco, and founding several ventures, including Next Web Capital, an investment firm supporting entrepreneurs and crypto startups. Previously known as Plasm Network, it was rebranded to Astar in 2021 and launched as a multi-chain smart contract platform on Polkadot in January 2022. Astar was developed by Stake Technologies, headquartered in Singapore and operating from Japan, with Watanabe serving as CEO.
Astar aims to become a comprehensive multi-chain smart contract platform supporting various layer 2 solutions, blockchains, and virtual machines. It is built on Parity Substrate, a web 3.0 blockchain-building framework that offers upgradable blockchains, modular architecture, customizable block execution logic, and hot-swappable consensus. This facilitates quick and easy blockchain development. Additional features include operator trading, which allows tokenizing smart contracts and transferring ownership or assigning operators; Multi-Lockdrop, a modified lockdrop enabling token distribution by locking tokens from other blockchains for a set period, encouraging network participation; and dApps staking with rewards, a monetization model that incentivizes dApp developers contributing to the ecosystem.
ASTR serves as a utility, governance, and staking token. Users can pay transaction fees, participate in governance through voting or proposing referenda, and stake tokens for consensus rewards. The total supply is 7,000,000,000 ASTR, with a circulating supply of 4,487,130,325 ASTR as of April 2023. Token distribution is as follows: 30% to users and early supporters, 5% to the team, 10% to the foundation, 5% for marketing, 10% for protocol developments and grants, 5% to the on-chain treasury (DAO), 10% to early financial backers, 20% for parachain auctions, and 5% for auction reserves.
Astar uses a nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) consensus mechanism and operates as a Polkadot parachain. This allows it to benefit from Polkadot's scalability and security through its segmented design and shared security umbrella.
Astar (ASTR) is available for purchase on several exchanges, including Binance, KuCoin, Kraken, Gate.io, OKX, Huobi, Crypto.com Exchange, BKEX, CoinEx, MEXC, Bitbank, WhiteBIT, XT.COM, BigONE, BingX, CoinW, Hotbit, and ZT. Coinasity shows the live ASTR price, averaged across major exchanges.
