Avalanche is a Layer 1 blockchain platform supporting decentralized applications and custom blockchain networks as an Ethereum rival. It processes up to 6,500 transactions per second while maintaining scalability through unique architecture comprising three individual blockchains: X-Chain, C-Chain, and P-Chain. Each serves distinct purposes with different consensus mechanisms matched to use cases, diverging from Bitcoin and Ethereum's approach where all nodes validate all transactions. Since its 2020 mainnet launch, Avalanche developed a DApps and DeFi ecosystem with integration from projects like SushiSwap and TrueUSD, continuously improving interoperability with Ethereum through bridge development.
Ava Labs founding team includes Cornell University professor Emin Gün Sirer and Cornell computer science PhDs Kevin Sekniqi and Maofan Ted Yin. Gün Sirer, a cryptographic research veteran, designed a conceptual peer-to-peer currency predating Bitcoin by six years and contributed to Bitcoin scaling solutions and Ethereum research before The DAO 2016 hack. The 2018 Ava Labs foundation whitepaper led to a February 2019 seed round including Polychain, Andreessen Horowitz, and Balaji Srinivasan. Avalanche completed its 2020 initial coin offering in under 24 hours, raising million.
Avalanche addresses the blockchain trilemma—the proposition that blockchains cannot achieve sufficient decentralization at scale—with three interoperable blockchains. The X-Chain creates and exchanges native AVAX tokens and assets following ERC-20 standardized rules using Avalanche consensus. The C-Chain hosts smart contracts and DApps with its own Avalanche Virtual Machine allowing EVM-compatible DApp forking and Snowman consensus. The P-Chain coordinates network validators, tracks active subnets, and enables new subnet creation as validator sets potentially validating multiple blockchains. This computing task division enables higher throughput without sacrificing decentralization, improving interoperability with integrating blockchains while tailoring consensus mechanisms to specific requirements.
AVAX total supply reaches 720 million with distribution: 2.5% seed sale (10% released at mainnet, remainder quarterly), 3.5% private sale (10% at mainnet, remainder quarterly), 10% public sale (10% at mainnet, 15% quarterly over 18 months), 9.26% foundation (ten years), 7% community endowment (twelve months), 0.27% testnet incentives (one year), 5% strategic partners (four years), 2.5% airdrops (four years), 10% team (four years), 50% staking rewards. Current AVAX staking yields 11.57% annualized with two-week minimum staking and 2,000 AVAX minimum.
AVAX on the Exchange Chain employs Avalanche consensus—distinct from proof-of-work and proof-of-stake with no single transaction-processing leader. Instead, all nodes process and validate transactions using directed acyclic graph protocols where transactions process simultaneously with validator random polling ensuring correctness with statistical certainty. Lacking blocks enables immediate finalization and significantly boosts blockchain speed.
AVAX trades on Binance, Bitfinex, Gate.io, and Kucoin.
