Axelar is a blockchain project focused on enabling cross-chain communication for Web3 applications. It offers a decentralized network, a software development kit with protocols and APIs, and gateway smart contracts designed to facilitate connectivity between different blockchain networks. The network operates on a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, with validators securing the system and routing messages.
The project's native token, AXL, is used within the Axelar network. The protocol also supports cross-chain transfers of several native tokens through wrapped ERC-20 versions, including AVAX, ETH, FTM, GLMR, and MATIC. Axelar has received funding from investors such as Binance, Coinbase Ventures, Dragonfly Capital, and Polychain Capital.
Axelar was launched in 2020 by Georgios Vlachos and Sergey Gorbunov, who were both part of the founding team at Algorand. Vlachos designed the Algorand consensus protocol, while Gorbunov led efforts to standardize BLS signatures, a standard adopted as a draft by CFRG and followed by Ethereum 2.0 implementations. Gorbunov is also an assistant professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
In December 2022, Axelar introduced a $60 million startup funding program backed by over 15 blockchain investors, aimed at supporting the development of decentralized applications and protocols that could replace centralized exchanges. The total token supply of AXL is 1,070,075,609, with a circulating supply of 301,937,372 at the time of writing. Token allocations include 29.5% for backers, 17% for the team, 12.5% for company operations, 5% for community sale, and 36% for community programs.
