Axie Infinity is a blockchain-based game centered around collecting, breeding, and battling digital creatures called Axies. Players can own and trade these creatures as non-fungible tokens (NFTs), with each Axie having unique attributes and body parts. The game draws inspiration from titles like Pokémon and Tamagotchi, offering a wide variety of over 500 body parts across different categories and rarity levels. Axies can participate in 3v3 battles, earn experience points, and breed to create new offspring. The ecosystem also includes a governance token called Axie Infinity Shards (AXS).
Axie Infinity was founded in 2018 by Sky Mavis, a game development company primarily based in Vietnam. The co-founders are Trung Nguyen, who serves as CEO, and Aleksander Larsen, who is COO. Nguyen has a background in software engineering, while Larsen previously worked in blockchain gaming and as a security officer for the Norwegian Government. The team consists of 25 full-time employees, many with experience in game development.
Axie Infinity stands out due to the vast combination of body parts each Axie can have, resulting in unique and varied creatures. To manage the population, each Axie can only breed up to seven times. The game includes a mating hub to help players find suitable breeding partners, with costs involving both ETH and Small Love Potion (SLP) tokens. Additionally, AXS token holders can stake their tokens for rewards, but they must also participate in voting and gameplay to claim them.
The core gameplay involves buying Axies, battling in PvE or PvP modes, breeding them, and trading on the marketplace. Axies can be bred up to seven times, and the game world, Lunacia, is divided into tokenized plots where players can gather resources. Community involvement is key, with players contributing to governance and content creation. To address scalability, Axie Infinity uses a custom sidechain called Ronin Network, which enables fast and low-cost transactions on Ethereum.
The AXS token was launched in November 2020 and serves as the governance token for the Axie Infinity ecosystem. The total supply is 270 million tokens, with approximately 53.5 million in circulation as of mid-November 2020. The distribution includes allocations for Binance Launchpad participants, private sale, staking rewards, play-to-earn pool, team, advisors, and ecosystem fund. According to Binance Research, all tokens are expected to be in circulation by early 2026.
AXS is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, secured by Ethereum's proof-of-work (PoW) consensus. In early 2021, Axie Infinity planned to migrate its NFTs to a custom sidechain called Ronin, developed by Sky Mavis. Ronin is designed for fast transaction confirmations, lower gas fees, and scalability, specifically tailored for Axie Infinity.
As of October 2021, AXS is available on major exchanges such as Binance, Huobi Global, Coinbase, Bithumb, KuCoin, Gate.io, and Kraken. Trading pairs include AXS/USDT, AXS/BTC, AXS/BUSD, and AXS/BNB. There is also interest in pairs with fiat currencies like PHP, AUD, and EUR, reflecting the game's global popularity.
Axie Infinity is a blockchain-based game centered on collecting, breeding, battling, and trading digital creatures called Axies. These creatures exist as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with distinct attributes and strengths. Players can use them in 3v3 battles to earn experience points, which help level up stats or evolve body parts. Axies can also be bred together to create new offspring, though each one is limited to seven breedings to control population. The game includes a marketplace where players can trade Axies and virtual land plots.
The project operates with a governance token called Axie Infinity Shards (AXS), which allows holders to vote on key decisions and the use of funds from the Axie Community Treasury. Future plans include staking AXS for rewards, with participation in voting and gameplay required to claim them.
