Band is a decentralized oracle network that provides real-world data to blockchains and AI systems. It was launched in 2019 on Ethereum and later migrated to the Cosmos ecosystem in June 2020 with the release of Band v2, aiming to improve scalability and enable cross-chain data transfers via the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol. Band's infrastructure supports DeFi, GameFi, and AI applications, ensuring secure and reliable access to real-time information without counterparty risk.
Band was founded in 2017 by Soravis Srinawakoon, Paul Chonpimai, and Sorawit Suriyakarn. Soravis, the CEO, previously worked as a software engineer at Ericsson and a management consultant at Boston Consulting Group. Paul, the CPO, has experience as a web developer at Turfmapp and an engineer at Tripadvisor. Sorawit, the CTO, is a former software engineer at Dropbox and Quora and a gold medalist competitive programmer. The team also includes about 20 additional employees, with support from investors like Sequoia Capital, Dunamu & Partners, Spartan Group, and Binance.
Band stands out as a cross-chain oracle powered by Cosmos IBC, enabling fast and secure data transfers across multiple blockchains. With Band v3, it offers broader data coverage, lower latency, and enhanced developer tools. In 2025, Band rebranded to focus on becoming the Unified Data Layer for AI and Web3, introducing Membit to provide real-time context to AI models. This positions Band as a pioneer in bridging decentralized data and artificial intelligence.
The BAND token was initially distributed through an Initial Exchange Offering on Binance Launchpad in September 2019, with 27.37% of tokens allocated across seed, private, and public sales. The allocation included 20% for the team, 5% for advisors, and 25.63% for the ecosystem. Since BandChain runs on a Cosmos SDK-based chain with an inflationary model, the total supply has gradually increased over time.
BandChain, built on the Cosmos SDK, uses a Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus algorithm combined with a delegated proof-of-stake (dPOS) mechanism. This setup secures the network's oracles and allows BAND holders to stake their tokens to earn rewards. Recently, BAND tokens were relaunched as native tokens on BandChain, replacing the previous ERC-20 version. Holders of the old tokens can swap them 1:1 via Binance to participate in staking.
BAND is available on several major exchanges, including Binance, Coinbase Pro, and OKX, since its listing in September 2019. Most trading pairs involve Tether (USDT) and Bitcoin (BTC), but on Coinbase Pro, BAND can also be traded against fiat currencies like GBP, USD, and EUR. For beginners, there are guides available to help with buying cryptocurrency.
Band is a data infrastructure project designed to supply real-time information to blockchain applications and artificial intelligence systems. It serves sectors such as decentralized finance, gaming, and AI agents, aiming to provide data access without counterparty risk. The project originated in 2019 as a decentralized oracle network on Ethereum, created to bring external data into smart contracts. In June 2020, it migrated to the Cosmos ecosystem, leveraging the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol to enable cross-chain data transfers.
The project was founded in 2017 by Soravis Srinawakoon, Paul Chonpimai, and Sorawit Suriyakarn, who serve as CEO, CPO, and CTO respectively. In 2025, it rebranded from Band Protocol to Band, introducing two main offerings: Band v3, an upgraded data network with broader coverage and lower latency, and Membit, a product providing real-time context to large language models. The native token, BAND, is used for transaction fees, data requests, validator staking, and governance.
The project is supported by investors including Sequoia Capital, Spartan Group, and Binance. Its team includes additional staff based primarily in Asia. Band positions itself as a cross-chain oracle solution, aiming to bridge blockchain data and AI applications.
