BitShares Blockchain is a decentralized platform designed for high-performance financial operations. It operates as a Blockchain as an Organization (BaO), where the core token holders influence its direction. The platform records financial transactions securely and offers various access controls. It aims to support entrepreneurs, investors, and developers interested in free market solutions through global consensus and decision-making, similar to how the internet transformed information sharing.
BTS is the primary utility token on BitShares Blockchain. It is used to pay transaction fees and support development. Holders have governance power, allowing them to vote on proposals, select committee members, and approve witness nodes that validate transactions. This voting system enables the community to manage and improve the blockchain.
BitShares was launched on October 13, 2015, following community efforts since 2013. It was co-founded by Daniel Larimer, known for EOS.IO and Steemit, and Charles Hoskinson, a co-founder of Ethereum and CEO of IOHK. As of January 2021, the core team had 17 permanent workers and over 60 long-term contributors.
BitShares supports various decentralized products, including a Decentralized Exchange (DEX), User Issued Assets (UIA), Market Pegged Assets (MPA) or smart assets, Decentralized Finance (DeFi), Liquidity Pools (LP) with Automated Market Makers (AMM), Prediction Markets (PM), and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT).
The genesis block distributed 2,412,042,197.37963 BTS, claimable by key holders. The maximum supply is set at 3,600,570,502.10207 BTS, with the difference reserved for future funding and block producers, accessible only via worker proposals. As of January 2021, nearly 3 billion BTS were in circulation, about 83% of the max supply. Initial funding came from community investments totaling 5,904 BTC and 415,000 ProtoShares.
BitShares uses a delegated proof-of-stake system where witnesses produce and broadcast blocks, enabling fast transaction finalization. The blockchain protocol defines deterministic behavior, ensuring consistent state from the same operations, making it tamper-proof and auditable. Over 50 operations are available to facilitate various functions.
BitShares is a decentralized, open-source blockchain platform designed to support financial technology operations. It operates as a "Blockchain as Organization" (BaO), where holders of its core token, BTS, can influence the platform's development and future direction. The blockchain records financial transactions between accounts and includes various access controls over users' financial resources. BTS serves as the utility token for transaction fees and contributes to the platform's ongoing development.
The platform aims to extend blockchain innovation to industries that rely on the internet, such as banking, stock exchanges, voting, and auctions. By using distributed consensus technology, it seeks to create autonomous organizations that operate under transparent, auditable rules without traditional human management. This approach is intended to offer services at lower costs compared to centralized counterparts, while maintaining global accessibility and trustworthiness.
BitShares employs a Delegated Proof of Stake consensus mechanism to coordinate decision-making among its participants. This method is presented as an efficient alternative to other consensus models, allowing stakeholders to collectively agree on actions. The project has undergone various changes over time, adapting to advancements in blockchain technology while maintaining its focus on decentralized governance and free-market principles.
