What is BitTorrent?
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing platform that has incorporated decentralized elements over time. The software first appeared in July 2001 and was created by developer Bram Cohen, who aimed to provide an alternative to traditional content distribution methods. In July 2018, the platform was acquired by the blockchain company TRON, and a native token called BTT was introduced in February 2019 on TRON's blockchain using the TRC-10 standard.
The BTT token has a total supply of 990 billion units, as outlined in its whitepaper. A portion of this supply was allocated to public, private, and seed sales, while other shares were designated for airdrops through 2025, the BitTorrent team and foundation, the TRON foundation, ecosystem development, and partnership activities. BTT is used within certain BitTorrent products, such as enabling users to pay for faster download speeds.
