BitcoinOS (BOS) is an open protocol aimed at broadening Bitcoin's use beyond a secure monetary network into a foundation for a programmable and interoperable digital economy. It uses Bitcoin as its settlement layer and provides tools for developers to build decentralized applications and cross-chain solutions while maintaining Bitcoin's security properties. Introduced in 2025, the protocol seeks to tackle challenges related to scalability, programmability, fragmentation, and trustless interoperability.
The system employs rollups and execution environments designed as Bitcoin Layer 2 solutions, using technologies such as BitSNARK and Grail to enable gas fees in BTC, inherit base-layer security, and support trustless bridging between Bitcoin's mainnet and Layer 2 networks. This setup aims to facilitate faster, lower-cost transactions. BOS also introduces a universal token standard for programmable assets with features like staking and governance, and uses SLAM nodes with zero-knowledge proofs to streamline multichain interactions, creating a more unified user experience.
Additional elements include privacy-focused rollups for confidential transactions and a trustless bridging mechanism verified on Bitcoin, reducing reliance on third-party custodians. The protocol is designed as an open ecosystem, inviting contributions from developers and institutions, and supports use cases ranging from institutional finance to consumer applications. Its goal is to position Bitcoin as a backbone for a global, programmable economy without introducing a separate blockchain.
