The Canton Network is a layer 1 blockchain designed for smart contracts, with a focus on configurable privacy and controls to support the adoption of real-world assets and traditional finance institutions. Its architecture employs a two-tier consensus mechanism intended to enable horizontal scalability while preserving smart contract interoperability across the network. The Global Synchronizer functions as the central infrastructure for this ecosystem.
Canton Coin (CC) serves as a utility token within this framework, used to settle application and infrastructure fees on the Global Synchronizer. It also provides incentives and rewards for network participants, including those running the synchronizer, full nodes, or applications. All tokens are earned through network contributions, with no pre-mine or pre-sale. The reward schedule follows a set mining curve that includes halvings and allocations among the three participant groups. Fees collected are burned, a mechanism described as Burn Mint Equilibrium, which aims to align token price with utility.
The Global Synchronizer MainNet and Canton Coin launched in July 2024. By February 2025, roughly 22 billion CC were in circulation. The maximum minable supply over the first decade is set at approximately 100 billion CC, after which a steady annual reward stream of 2.5 billion CC is planned. Future total supply depends on the volume of fees burned. The network and its foundation were initiated by a consortium of traditional finance and crypto institutions, with the Global Synchronizer Foundation managed under the Linux Foundation. Digital Asset, the developer of the Canton protocol and its Daml smart contract language, was founded by Don Wilson, Yuval Rooz, Eric Saraniecki, and Shaul Kfir.
