Celo is a blockchain that aims to be carbon-negative and operates without permission, featuring a broad ecosystem of partners building Web3 applications to foster a more inclusive financial system. It is designed for mobile phone users and comprises a decentralized proof-of-stake technology stack, the CELO governance token, and stable assets like cUSD, cEUR, and cREAL. Launched on Earth Day 2020, the mainnet is open source. The community has voted to transition Celo to an Ethereum layer-2. Validators include major companies, and over 1,000 projects across 150+ countries are building on the platform.
Celo was founded in 2017 by Rene Reinsberg, who now serves as President of the Celo Foundation; Marek Olszewski, the current CTO at cLabs; and Sep Kamvar, a computer scientist and former MIT Media Lab professor.
Celo stands out as a carbon-negative, permissionless blockchain that uses the CELO asset and ERC-20 stablecoins for transaction fees. Its focus on interoperability and cross-chain compatibility aims to bring regenerative finance (ReFi) to the mainstream by promoting financial inclusion and climate-positive initiatives. As one of the first carbon-negative blockchains, its proof-of-stake mechanism consumes minimal energy. The project is part of the Climate Collective, and the Mento Reserve holds a diverse portfolio of digital assets to support stable assets on the network.
The total supply of CELO is fixed at one billion tokens. The circulating supply is divided between the Mento Reserve and the broader community of CELO holders.
Celo employs a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. The CELO token is used for staking, allowing holders to support validators, vote on protocol changes, and interact with dapps. Validators are crucial for network security; they independently verify transactions and propose new blocks to the blockchain.
CELO is available for purchase on major exchanges such as Binance, Coinbase (listed as CGLD), KuCoin, and OKX. Additionally, it can be bought through fiat on-ramps like MoonPay, Ramp Network, and Simplex/Nuvei.
Celo is a permissionless blockchain designed to be carbon-negative, with a focus on supporting a more inclusive financial system. It operates on a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism and includes a governance asset called CELO, along with several stable assets such as cUSD, cEUR, and cREAL, which can be used for transaction fees. The mainnet launched in April 2020, and the community has approved an indicative proposal to migrate the network to an Ethereum layer-2. The platform supports over 1,000 projects across more than 150 countries, with validators including major companies.
The project was co-founded in 2017 by Rene Reinsberg, Marek Olszewski, and Sep Kamvar. Celo's mobile-first approach includes features like a light-client syncing mechanism called Plumo, which uses zk-SNARKs to enable faster synchronization on low-powered devices, and the ability to map encrypted phone numbers to wallet addresses. The network is also involved in the Climate Collective, a coalition focused on Web3 and climate action.
CELO has a fixed supply of one billion tokens, with circulation split between the Mento Reserve and holders. Through staking, CELO holders can support validators, vote on protocol changes, and interact with decentralized applications. Validators help secure the network by verifying transactions and proposing blocks.
