Chia Network Inc. (CNI) provides software that helps businesses tokenize, hold, and trade assets while ensuring their authenticity and traceability. The open-source Chia blockchain, created by Bram Cohen (who also invented BitTorrent), offers secure and compliant infrastructure for this purpose. The XCH token operates on a layer 1 blockchain using a custom programming language called Chialisp and a consensus mechanism known as proof-of-space-and-time (PoST). This approach reduces energy consumption without weakening security. CNI released its first proof-of-time function in 2019, a beta blockchain in 2020, and a fully functional mainnet in 2021.
Chia Network was founded in Delaware in 2017 by Bram Cohen, who also created BitTorrent. The company is led by experienced executives, including CEO Gene Hoffman, who previously headed public companies. In May 2021, CNI raised $61 million from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Slow Ventures, Naval Ravikant, and Galaxy Digital, among others.
Chia Network distinguishes itself by using a consensus method that consumes less electricity than proof-of-stake or proof-of-work. It combines proof-of-space, where miners allocate unused hard drive space to store cryptographic numbers, with proof-of-time, which uses Verifiable Delay Functions to verify elapsed time. Timelords, special nodes, ensure accurate timekeeping. Additionally, Chia developed its own smart contract language, Chialisp, for on-chain programming.
As of June 15, 2025, the circulating supply of XCH is 32,999,582. A total of 21 million XCH were pre-farmed to support the network's development. Farming rewards follow a schedule: 64 XCH every 10 minutes for the first three years, then halving every three years until reaching 4 XCH per 10 minutes after year 12. This means the network could control 47% of XCH after 12 years, though CNI has sold XCH since October 2023, potentially reducing its share.
Chia Network employs a unique blend of proof-of-space and proof-of-time for security. Governance differs from typical crypto projects: CNI operates as a traditional corporation rather than a DAO. The company plans to list its equity on a stock exchange, believing this aligns incentives better. Consequently, holding XCH does not grant governance rights over the blockchain, setting it apart from many other public networks.
XCH can be purchased on several platforms, including Chia Cloud Wallet, Huobi, Gate.io, Uniswap (V2), KuCoin, and OKEx.

The project was founded in Delaware in 2017, with a beta version of the blockchain launching in 2020 and full mainnet functionality, including wallets and smart contracts, arriving in 2021. The consensus mechanism combines proof-of-space, which uses unused hard drive storage, with proof-of-time, which relies on Verifiable Delay Functions. Chialisp incorporates elements from other blockchain languages while retaining Bitcoin's UTXO model, allowing for simultaneous transactions.
As of mid-June 2025, the circulating supply of XCH is approximately 33 million, with 21 million coins pre-farmed to support network development. Farming rewards are scheduled to decrease over time, starting at 64 XCH every 10 minutes for the first three years and halving periodically thereafter. CNI began selling XCH in October 2023, and the network may hold a majority of the token supply if no buybacks occur.
