Civic is a blockchain-based identity management platform that allows individuals and businesses to manage and safeguard personal identity information. It aims to transform identity verification by giving users greater control over their data while enabling access to various services without sharing excessive personal details. The system uses distributed ledger technology for real-time identity authorization, allowing users to share only necessary information with partners after their consent. Unlike other services, Civic stores sensitive data on the user's mobile device, and authorization is granted via biometric signatures through the app. The ecosystem is powered by the CVC utility token, which facilitates identity-related transactions between participants, and users can earn CVC by completing tasks like signing up.
Civic was founded in 2015 by Vinny Lingham and Jonathan Smith. Vinny Lingham is a serial entrepreneur who appeared on Shark Tank South Africa in 2016 and has co-founded several companies, including Newtown Partners and Gyft, a digital gift card platform backed by Google Ventures. He serves as Civic's CEO. Jonathan Smith, the CTO, has over 15 years of experience in banking and held roles at Deloitte MCS Limited, HSH Nordbank, and Genpact Headstrong Capital Markets. The team also includes COO Chris Hart, who has 20 years of senior finance experience and previously worked at Guidebook and Nextag. As of the source, the official LinkedIn page lists 38 employees, many based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Civic simplifies identity verification for users while maintaining control over personal information. It helps businesses onboard customers faster through AI-powered verification, combined with human review to reduce fraud and ensure compliance with AML and OFAC regulations. As of December 2020, Civic offers two main products: the Civic wallet and Health Key. The wallet is a mobile crypto wallet supporting Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USD Coin, and also serves as an identity management tool, with $1 million Bitcoin insurance from Coincover. Health Key is a newer app that lets employers securely verify employees' health status, such as antibody presence or vaccination, to determine readiness to return to work after a COVID-19 infection, all while protecting employee privacy.
As of late December 2020, there were exactly 670 million CVC tokens in circulation, representing 67% of the maximum 1 billion total supply. According to the token sale details, 1 billion CVC were created, with 33% sold during the token sale, 33% retained by Civic, 33% allocated for incentives and rewards, and 1% used for sale costs. As of that time, the 330 million tokens held by Civic remained untouched, stored in a multi-signature Ethereum wallet that could be tracked publicly.
As an ERC-20 token, CVC relies on the Ethereum blockchain, which is considered one of the most decentralized and secure proof-of-work networks. Ethereum is planned to transition to proof-of-stake with Ethereum 2.0, after which CVC transactions will be secured by validator nodes. Additionally, digital identities stored in the Civic app are protected by the user's own device, which controls access to their data.
CVC is highly liquid and available on many exchanges, including Binance, Coinbase Pro, and Huobi Global. It is commonly traded against Tether (USDT), the Korean won (KRW), and Bitcoin (BTC). The ecosystem operates with a utility token called Civic (CVC), used to settle identity-related transactions between participants, such as customers and service providers. Users can earn CVC by signing up for services or referring new users, while validators can earn tokens for verifying documents. The project was launched in 2018 after a token sale the previous year. It was co-founded in 2015 by Vinny Lingham, who serves as CEO, and Jonathan Smith, the CTO. Lingham has a background as a serial entrepreneur, while Smith brings over 15 years of banking experience.
