Constitution DAO was a decentralized autonomous organization that formed in November 2021 with the goal of purchasing one of the 13 remaining original copies of the U.S. Constitution at a Sotheby's auction. Despite raising over $40 million in ETH, the group was outbid by billionaire Ken Griffin. After the loss, the DAO disbanded and refunded all donations.
Constitution DAO did not have a single founder but emerged from grassroots fundraising movements similar to those behind meme coins like Dogecoin. It raised over $47 million from more than 17,000 donors in just days, with a median donation of $206. Key contributors included Brian Wagner and Liminal Warmth.
Constitution DAO stood out as an internet-driven movement that challenged traditional institutions using cryptocurrency. It gained viral attention through memes and social media, amassing 20,000 Discord members within a week. The DAO raised over $47 million via Juicebox, but underestimated auction fees and storage costs, ultimately losing the bid.
PEOPLE is a governance token that would have granted holders voting rights on where the Constitution would be displayed. However, since the DAO did not acquire the document, the token does not represent fractional ownership of the Constitution.
Constitution DAO operated as a non-profit entity connected to an LLC, which was legally owned by two of its members.
PEOPLE can be traded on Uniswap (V3) and through the 0x Protocol.
ConstitutionDAO was a decentralized autonomous organization formed in November 2021 by a group of web3 enthusiasts. Its goal was to purchase a copy of the U.S. Constitution at a Sotheby’s auction, one of only 13 original physical copies in existence. The group raised more than $47 million in Ether from over 17,000 donors within a few days, with a median donation of $206. Despite the substantial funds, the DAO was outbid by billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin, who opposed Bitcoin. The failure was partly attributed to unaccounted auction house fees and storage costs.
The DAO did not have a single founder but emerged from grassroots fundraising movements similar to those behind meme coins. Key contributors included Brian Wagner and Liminal Warmth. The initiative gained rapid attention through viral Twitter activity, including memes inspired by Nicolas Cage and the crypto-specific (x,x) meme. The DAO’s Discord server grew to 20,000 members within about a week. After the unsuccessful auction, the DAO announced its dissolution, citing technical and administrative requirements. Donations could be reclaimed indefinitely through the project’s website.
PEOPLE is the governance token associated with the DAO, which would have granted voting rights on where the Constitution copy would be displayed. The project was structured as a non-profit connected to an LLC legally owned by two members. PEOPLE tokens are available for trading on Uniswap (V3) and the 0x Protocol.
