Dash is a decentralized, open-source cryptocurrency designed to facilitate fast and low-cost global transactions. Its whitepaper describes it as an improvement over Bitcoin, offering enhanced privacy and quicker processing times. The name is derived from 'digital cash.' Launched in January 2014 as a fork of Litecoin, Dash has introduced features like a two-tier network with incentivized masternodes, decentralized governance, InstantSend for immediate payments, ChainLocks for blockchain immutability, and PrivateSend for optional transaction privacy.
Dash was created by software developers Evan Duffield and Kyle Hagan. Initially named XCoin, it was rebranded to Darkcoin two weeks later, then to Dash in March 2015 to improve its public image. Duffield, with a background in finance and software development, conceived the idea in 2012 to add anonymity to Bitcoin and coded the initial version over a weekend. He led Dash Core Group until December 2017. Hagan co-authored the original whitepaper but left the project in December 2014.
Dash aims to be the most user-friendly and scalable payments-focused cryptocurrency. It utilizes a network of masternodes, which are servers collateralized with Dash, to provide advanced services like InstantSend, PrivateSend, and ChainLocks, as well as governance. These masternodes receive part of the block rewards. Dash targets both individuals and institutions, including merchants and financial services. Its treasury system allocates 20% of block rewards to fund decentralized development projects, supporting organizations like Dash Core Group.
The maximum supply of Dash is capped at 18,921,005 tokens, though this could be lower if the 10% reserved for budget proposals is never fully allocated. New Dash is created via proof-of-work mining, with the emission rate decreasing by about 7% every 210,240 blocks (roughly every 383 days). Currently, miners receive 45% of new coins, masternodes get 45%, and 10% goes to the treasury. An approved proposal will change the miner/masternode split from 50/50 to 40/60. Shortly after launch, about 2 million coins were mined due to a bug inherited from Litecoin, exceeding the planned schedule.
Dash employs a two-tier security model. The first tier uses proof-of-work (PoW) consensus, where miners compete to solve cryptographic puzzles, and at least 51% of nodes must approve transactions. The PoW algorithm, X11, uses a sequence of 11 hashing functions. The second tier consists of masternodes operating under proof-of-service, rated by their service history. They can reject improperly added blocks and enable ChainLocks, where a rotating group of masternodes verifies new blocks every 12 hours, providing protection against 51% attacks.
Dash is available on major cryptocurrency exchanges such as Binance, Coinbase Pro, Huobi Global, Kraken, and OKEx. It can be traded against fiat currencies, other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether, and stablecoins such as Tether and USD Coin. Both spot and derivatives markets are available.
