Energy Web Token (EWT) is the native utility token of the Energy Web decentralized platform, which is designed for energy and sustainability markets. The platform has two main components: Energy Web X, a public proof-of-stake blockchain, and Verified Compute Cloud, which handles off-chain computation for business logic. EWT also exists as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, which acts as a primary settlement environment. A validator-governed bridge connects Ethereum and Energy Web X, allowing the token to be used on both networks while keeping its total supply intact. The original Energy Web Chain, launched in June 2019, still operates but only for archival purposes.
The Energy Web Foundation, a Swiss nonprofit co-founded in 2017 by the Rocky Mountain Institute and Grid Singularity, helped establish the initiative with input from energy companies and grid operators. The network now runs under collective governance involving validators, nominators, and token holders. EWT was issued in June 2019 with a fixed supply of 100 million tokens, and roughly 84 million are currently in circulation. Security on Energy Web X relies on a nominated proof-of-stake system, where collators produce blocks and nominators stake EWT to support them, with slashing risks for misbehavior. The network also benefits from Polkadot Relay Chain security as a parachain. EWT is available for trading on multiple major cryptocurrency exchanges.
