Electroneum is a Layer 1 blockchain that is compatible with EVM and designed to be environmentally friendly, serving over 4 million users globally. It offers quick transactions with a finality of five seconds and very low fees, possibly the lowest for smart contracts. The network uses the Istanbul Byzantine Fault Tolerance (IBFT) consensus mechanism and relies on validators from universities, foundations, and Web3 infrastructure companies, ensuring speed, security, and energy efficiency. It has been the foundation for AnyTask.com, a freelance platform that allows unbanked individuals to earn using digital skills.
Electroneum Ltd. was established in 2017 by Richard Ells, a British entrepreneur. He also owns Retortal, a social media management platform for direct selling businesses, and co-founded SiteWizard, a digital agency where he remains a director. In 2019, he launched AnyTask.com, a successful freelance platform within the cryptocurrency space.
In early 2024, Electroneum underwent the 'Aurelius' upgrade, transforming into a Layer 1 EVM-compatible blockchain. Its validator system, operated by NGOs, foundations, and other known entities, is highly energy-efficient, resulting in one of the lowest transaction costs among Layer 1 blockchains. The network is also sustainable and eco-friendly. It uses a modified IBFT consensus with known validators, achieving five-second transaction finality and minimal smart contract costs. The network supports over 4 million users and powers AnyTask.com, which has more than 20,000 sellers in 140 countries, offering a unique freelance platform experience.
The total supply of Electroneum is capped at 21 billion ETN, with the circulating supply also limited by Electroneum Ltd. As of April 12, 2024, there were approximately 17.97 billion ETN in circulation, which is about 85.5% of the maximum supply.
The Electroneum network is secured using the IBFT consensus mechanism with a set of known validators. This approach ensures immediate block finality, with transactions completing in five seconds. It works by proposing only one block per height, reducing fork complexity and the chance of transaction reversals. A supermajority of validators must approve blocks, making forgery difficult. Validator leadership rotates to prevent any single faulty node from having long-term influence. The validator group can be adjusted over time, allowing only trusted nodes to participate, which maintains network security and reliability.
Electroneum can be traded on several major exchanges, including MEXC, Kucoin, HTX, Gate.io, CoinEx, and Biconomy. For beginners, there is a simplified guide available for purchasing cryptocurrency and finding additional exchanges where ETN can be traded.
Electroneum is a Layer 1 blockchain compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), designed to serve a user base of over four million people worldwide. The network processes transactions in approximately five seconds with immediate finality and aims to offer very low fees for smart contract deployment and usage. It operates using the Istanbul Byzantine Fault Tolerance (IBFT) consensus mechanism, supported by a set of known validators that include NGOs, universities, foundations, and Web3 infrastructure companies. This validator structure is intended to provide energy efficiency and a reduced environmental footprint compared to other blockchain networks.
The project has been active for several years, providing the underlying infrastructure for AnyTask.com, a freelance platform that enables users in over 140 countries to receive payments in ETN without needing a traditional bank account. Electroneum Ltd., the company behind the project, was founded in 2017 by British entrepreneur Richard Ells. In early 2024, the network underwent its 'Aurelius' update, transitioning to its current EVM-compatible Layer 1 form. The total supply of ETN is capped at 21 billion tokens, with roughly 17.97 billion already in circulation as of April 2024.
