Swarm (BZZ) is a project focused on decentralizing the internet by providing an infrastructure for data storage and communication. Its stated goal is to serve as a foundational layer for a re-decentralized web, enabling applications to operate without central control. The network is designed to maintain data availability and redundancy even if individual nodes go offline, with data broken into small chunks and distributed across the network without central hubs. Node operators are compensated for storing and delivering data, while users pay for bandwidth and storage services.
The native token, BZZ, has a fixed supply of 63,149,437 tokens. The network incentivizes node operators to provide high-quality service, as those who deliver popular content and offer more bandwidth or storage receive greater traffic and rewards. This competitive structure is intended to support network growth and security.
An ecosystem of projects, including marketplaces, NFTs, and data stores, is emerging on top of Swarm, with the Swarm Foundation offering grants to encourage development. The project aims to shift data management away from centralized servers, proposing a model where users directly bear the cost of access and hosting, thereby enabling a self-sovereign digital environment.
