Firo, previously known as Zcoin, is a cryptocurrency designed to function as private digital cash. It introduced the Lelantus privacy protocol, which allows users to burn their coins and later redeem them for new ones with no transaction history. Before Lelantus, Firo was the first to implement the Zerocoin protocol practically, which was widely used until it was replaced by Sigma and then Lelantus after cryptographic flaws were found in 2019.
Firo was founded by Poramin Insom, who holds a master's degree in Information Security from Johns Hopkins University and wrote a paper on implementing Zerocoin. He is also a co-founder of Satang Corporation and served in the Royal Thai Armed Forces' cyber warfare division. Reuben Yap joined in 2016, leading strategy and development. He advocates for privacy, founded an early VPN service in Southeast Asia, and became Project Steward and Co-Founder in November 2019.
Firo's Lelantus and Sigma protocols use one-out-of-many proofs, a type of zero-knowledge proof that doesn't require a trusted setup or complex assumptions while offering high anonymity. Firo was the first to deploy Dandelion++ in October 2018, which obscures IP addresses during transactions. In November 2018, its blockchain was used for Thailand's Democrat Party primary, with over 127,000 votes, marking the first large-scale blockchain election. Firo rebranded from Zcoin in October 2020.
As of August 2021, Firo has a circulating supply of 12,211,042 FIRO and a maximum supply of 21,400,000 FIRO. Its distribution schedule is similar to Bitcoin's.
Firo uses a PoW-Chainlock hybrid model where quorums of hundreds of masternodes are deterministically selected to vote on the first-seen rule, locking blocks and preventing reorganizations. This ensures finality with one confirmation and mitigates 51% attacks, as compromising more than half of the masternode network would be needed. Its mining algorithm, MTP, is memory-hard and ASIC-resistant, and it's transitioning to FiroPOW, a ProgPOW variant for GPU mining that's even more resistant to ASICs and FPGAs.
Firo can be traded on exchanges like MEXC, CoinEX, Huobi Global, Gate, Biconomy, FMFW, and AscendEX. Additionally, it can be swapped using services such as ChangeNOW, LetsExchange, StealthEX, MajesticBank, Exchang.io, SimpleSwap, Changelly, and Swapzone.
Firo (FIRO), previously called Zcoin, is a cryptocurrency designed to function as private digital cash. Its privacy-focused approach is built around the Lelantus protocol, which lets users burn coins and later redeem them for new ones without any prior transaction history. This mechanism aims to sever the link between past and future transactions.
The project has a history of pioneering privacy technology. It was the first cryptocurrency to implement the Zerocoin protocol in practice, later replacing it with Sigma and then Lelantus after cryptographic weaknesses were identified in Zerocoin in 2019. Firo also deployed Dandelion++ in October 2018, a transaction propagation method intended to prevent IP addresses from being linked to transactions.
Poramin Insom founded the project, then known as Zcoin, drawing on his master's degree in Information Security from Johns Hopkins University. Reuben Yap, who joined shortly after the 2016 launch, now leads the project's strategy and research. In November 2018, the Firo blockchain was used in Thailand's Democrat Party primary election, recording over 127,000 votes and marking the first large-scale political election on a blockchain. The asset was rebranded from Zcoin to Firo in October 2020.
As of August 2021, Firo had a circulating supply of about 12.2 million FIRO and a maximum supply of 21.4 million coins. It uses a hybrid PoW-Chainlock consensus model, where masternode quorums lock in first-seen blocks, providing finality with a single confirmation and reducing the risk of 51% attacks. Its mining algorithm, MTP, is designed to resist ASICs, with plans to transition to FiroPOW, a GPU-focused variant. FIRO is available on several exchanges, including MEXC, Gate, and Huobi Global, as well as through various swap services.
