Flare is a layer 1 blockchain built on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) that aims to enhance blockchain utility by providing developers with decentralized access to reliable data from other blockchains and the internet. This allows for new applications and revenue models, and enables decentralized apps (dapps) to operate across multiple chains from a single deployment.
Flare distinguishes itself with two native interoperability protocols that enable decentralized, on-chain access to blockchain data, time series data, and Web2 API data. These protocols are secured by the network itself, with independent data providers incentivized to supply accurate information, reducing risks for users and developers. The State Connector securely acquires event data from other chains and the internet, while the Flare Time Series Oracle (FTSO) provides decentralized price and data feeds without relying on centralized sources.
FLR serves as the native token for payments, transaction fees to prevent spam, and staking in validator nodes. It can be wrapped into an ERC-20 token called WFLR, which can be delegated to FTSO data providers or used for governance. These uses are not exclusive and do not prevent WFLR from being used in other EVM-compatible dapps and smart contracts on Flare. WFLR is minted by depositing native FLR into a smart contract.
Flare mainnet launched on 14 July 2022, with the public token distribution event (TDE) on 9 January 2023. The total supply at genesis was 100 billion FLR, with 12 billion in circulation immediately after TDE. The public distribution continues with 36 monthly installments, providing a total of 28,524,921,372 FLR to the community. Flare is inflationary, with 10% of the circulating supply minted in the first year, distributed to FTSO data providers and delegators (70%), validators (20%), and State Connector attestation providers (10%).
Flare was founded by Hugo Philion, Sean Rowan, and Dr. Nairi Usher, who now serve as CEO, CTO, and Chief Scientist, respectively. The three met while studying machine learning at University College London, where they developed a shared interest in distributed systems and their potential applications.
Flare (FLR) is currently available for trading on several exchanges, with trading pairs involving cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.
Flare is an EVM-based layer-1 blockchain designed to provide developers with decentralized access to data from other blockchains and the internet. Its goal is to enable applications to serve multiple chains through a single deployment, supporting new use cases and monetization models. The network relies on two native interoperability protocols to achieve this, both secured by the network itself and operated by independent data providers who are incentivized to supply accurate information.
The State Connector securely retrieves event data from external blockchains and web sources for use in smart contracts on Flare, requiring consensus among independent attestation providers before information is released to dapps. The Flare Time Series Oracle (FTSO) delivers decentralized price and data feeds to applications without relying on centralized providers. These mechanisms give developers access to cryptocurrency prices, transaction details from other chains, and web event data.
