Gala is a web3 ecosystem built on its own layer-1 blockchain, GalaChain, which was initially created for its entertainment brands like Gala Games, Gala Music, and Gala Film. Now, GalaChain is open to external developers from any industry, offering open-source tools to simplify blockchain integration. The project aims to become the first blockchain with a billion users by enabling creators to build custom tokens, smart contracts, and node networks. Assets on GalaChain can be bridged to other blockchains like Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain. The network is powered by a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN).
$GALA is the native token of the Gala ecosystem, used as a utility and gas token for transactions on GalaChain. It was not launched through an ICO or similar event; instead, new tokens are minted as rewards for Founder's Node operators who help secure the network. More detailed information about $GALA and the ecosystem is available in the Gala Ecosystem Blueprint document.
Eric Schiermeyer, co-founder of Zynga, established Gala in 2019. With a background in social and blockchain gaming, he brought together early blockchain developers and gaming industry leaders. As of early 2024, the company is based in San Francisco and employs over 350 full-time staff, excluding contractors and external developers. The core brands include Gala Games, Gala Music, Gala Film, and GalaChain.
Gala stands out due to its custom layer-1 blockchain, GalaChain, designed for scalability and decentralization. It is developer-friendly, offering an open-source SDK and a simplified Creator Portal to ease blockchain adoption. The network is decentralized, powered by independent node networks, including 50,000 Founder's Nodes that receive daily $GALA rewards for their computational contributions. This structure incentivizes community participation and supports the ecosystem's growth.
The maximum supply of $GALA is capped at 50 billion tokens. The circulating supply can decrease when $GALA is burned as gas fees or used in ecosystem activities. All tokens originate as rewards to Founder's Node operators, with a current 50:50 split between them and the conservatorial entity, Gala. The emission rate adjusts based on the total supply; it decreases as supply grows, and halving events occur at certain milestones. If supply falls below a previous halving point, emissions may increase.
According to CertiK, $GALA is ranked as the third most secure altcoin, after Bitcoin and Ethereum. The token is managed via a Gnosis multisig wallet, which requires multiple signatures for transactions, reducing the risk of unauthorized access. Gala also works with international accounting and regulatory bodies to maintain compliance. After a thorough audit, CertiK awarded $GALA a Gold badge and AAA rating, reflecting its high security standards.
$GALA, as an Ethereum-based token, is available on numerous centralized and decentralized exchanges, with a full list in the Markets section. While it trades widely on Ethereum, its primary utility is on GalaChain, where it is initially distributed to Founder's Nodes and can be bridged to Ethereum for trading. On GalaChain, users can swap $GALA via the ecosystem's decentralized exchange, GalaSwap.
Gala is a web3 ecosystem built around GalaChain, a layer-1 blockchain designed to support its entertainment brands in gaming, music, and film, as well as external projects from various industries. The platform provides open-source developer resources, such as the GalaChain SDK and Creator Portal, to help innovators integrate web3 features like custom tokens, smart contracts, and reward systems. Assets on GalaChain can also be bridged to other networks, including Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain.
The network is powered by a decentralized physical infrastructure network of Founder’s Nodes, with 50,000 nodes in existence. Node operators earn daily $GALA rewards for contributing resources and hold voting rights on certain governance decisions. Individual projects can also establish their own node networks on GalaChain with specialized workloads. $GALA serves as the ecosystem’s utility and gas token, and it was not launched through an initial coin offering; new tokens are issued exclusively to Founder’s Node operators as rewards.
Founded in 2019 by Zynga co-founder Eric Schiermeyer, Gala is headquartered in San Francisco and had over 350 full-time employees as of early 2024. The ecosystem includes core brands such as Gala Games, Gala Music, Gala Film, and GalaChain, alongside contributions from external developers and contractors.
