Gitcoin is a project focused on developing tools and frameworks that support community-driven funding and collaboration. Its initiatives aim to assist communities in financing, building, and protecting projects that serve the public good, particularly within areas such as decentralized finance (DeFi), climate action, and open-source development. The Gitcoin Grants Program has reportedly distributed over $54 million to early-stage builders working on these public goods projects.
The project offers a range of products, including Gitcoin Grants Stack for managing grants, Allo Protocol as an open-source funding protocol, and Gitcoin Passport for decentralized identity management. Gitcoin was founded by Kevin Owocki and Kyle Weiss, and has evolved from a single platform into a suite of modular protocols. It utilizes various funding mechanisms, such as Quadratic Voting and Retroactive Public Goods Funding, and claims to have contributed to over $29 billion in global financial impact.
The GTC token, launched in late May 2021, serves as the governance token for the Gitcoin DAO. Its total supply is capped at 100 million tokens, with 15% allocated for a retroactive airdrop to past users, 50% for the DAO, and 35% for existing stakeholders. GTC is based on a governance system similar to COMP/UNI and carries no economic value. It is available for trading on several exchanges, including Binance, Coinbase, and KuCoin.
