Grin is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency built on the Mimblewimble protocol, which aims to balance confidentiality with scalability. The blockchain does not display addresses or transaction amounts and does not retain data on spent outputs, contributing to its lightweight design. The project is entirely open-source and community-run, with no central organization; development is carried out by volunteers and supported through donations. Its design allows scalability to grow with user numbers rather than transaction volume.
The network operates with a one-minute block time and a coinbase reward of 60 grins per block, resulting in a constant emission of one grin per second. This linear emission schedule leads to a decreasing inflation rate over time, a feature intended to support long-term network security and equitable coin distribution.
Grin's origins trace back to a 2016 document shared anonymously in a Bitcoin research channel, authored under the pseudonym Tom Elvis Jedusor. Later refinements by developer Andrew Poelstra contributed to the protocol's technical foundation. Implementation work began in late 2016 under the pseudonym Ignotus Peverell, and the network launched on January 15, 2019.
