Hifi is a decentralized finance protocol that enables fixed-rate lending and borrowing of crypto assets. It consists of decentralized interest rate markets with specific maturity dates, utilizing an Automated Market Maker model where users provide liquidity to pools and algorithms determine interest rates based on supply and demand. Participants can supply liquidity, borrow, or lend in active markets, with borrowers paying fixed rates without negotiating terms. Supplying tokens to pools earns rewards while facilitating peer-to-peer transactions. Governance is community-driven, and the HIFI token is an ERC-20 that allows holders to delegate voting rights, enabling proposals and changes to the protocol's parameters.
Hifi was established by Mick Hagen, an early blockchain enthusiast, who stepped down in early 2020. Doug Leonard then took over leadership, bringing experience as an avid NFT collector and having used early crypto protocols to finance personal purchases. Leonard has guided Hifi's rebranding and its shift toward decentralized finance.
Hifi stands out due to its fixed interest rate markets, offering predictability not commonly found in similar protocols. Borrowers know their exact repayment amounts upfront, and lenders can calculate their earnings before committing funds. This transparency provides more predictable outcomes in decentralized finance compared to variable rate systems.
The total supply of HIFI is 126.25 million tokens, with 101.25 million (80%) currently in circulation. The remaining 25 million will be distributed to Hifi Labs over two years. The emission rate can be adjusted through community governance proposals, allowing voters to increase or decrease the rate as needed.
Hifi's security relies on smart contracts that manage collateral deposits and the minting of hTokens, which are bond-like instruments settling on future dates. Lenders buy hTokens at a discount and redeem them at face value upon maturity. The protocol enforces a collateralization factor to keep all debt overcollateralized. If collateral falls below the maintenance threshold, it is sold to liquidators at a discount, reducing the loan and restoring proper collateral levels. This system ensures borrowers maintain collateral, protects lenders, and offers earning opportunities for liquidators.
Hifi is available on multiple exchanges, offering pairs with cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. As of February 2021, Binance provided the highest liquidity, while Bittrex offered a Bitcoin pair, and Upbit had a Korean Won pair. Additionally, Hifi can be purchased on Uniswap V2 for those seeking a decentralized trading option.
Hifi Finance (HIFI) is a decentralized finance protocol designed for lending and borrowing cryptocurrencies at fixed interest rates. The platform operates through decentralized interest rate markets that mature on specific dates, utilizing an automated market maker model where users contribute tokens to liquidity pools. An algorithm determines interest rates based on supply and demand dynamics, allowing participants to lend, borrow, or supply liquidity without negotiating terms such as maturity, rates, or collateral. This structure provides predictability, as borrowers know their exact repayment amounts upfront and lenders can anticipate their earnings before committing funds.
The platform is governed by Hifi Governance, a community-driven process that enables HIFI token holders to delegate voting rights and propose changes to system parameters, introduce new markets or collateral types, or allocate resources. HIFI is an ERC-20 token with a total supply of 126.25 million, of which approximately 101.25 million are in circulation. The remaining 25 million tokens are scheduled for distribution to Hifi Labs over two years, with emission rates subject to community governance adjustments.
Originally launched as Mainframe in November 2017 as a decentralized communications layer, the project pivoted to decentralized finance and rebranded to Hifi in early 2020. The protocol uses smart contracts to enforce collateralization, where borrowers deposit assets to mint hTokens, bond-like instruments that settle on future dates. Hifi is tradeable on several exchanges, including Binance, Bittrex, Upbit, and Uniswap V2, with varying liquidity and trading pairs.
