Holo is a decentralized platform that enables hosting of applications built with Holochain, a framework that avoids traditional blockchain technology. It aims to connect these applications to the regular internet, making them accessible to a wider audience. The network uses a token called HoloFuel for transactions, which is still in testing. In 2018, an ERC-20 token named HOT was created as a placeholder that can be exchanged for HoloFuel once it launches. The project is ongoing, with public testing expected around 2021.
Holo was created by Arthur Brock and Eric Harris-Braun, who are experienced programmers. They began working on it in late 2016 under the MetaCurrency Project, which focuses on tools for a peer-to-peer economy. Their earlier work on Ceptr, a framework for decentralized apps, influenced Holo's design. Brock has a background in alternative currency systems and co-founded several ventures, while Harris-Braun has been programming since 1988 and founded multiple software companies. Both have also been involved in educational and social enterprise initiatives.
Holo stands out by bridging Holochain's decentralized applications with the conventional internet, making them usable by everyday people. It relies on hosts who provide computing resources to run these apps, earning HoloFuel as compensation. This token is designed for microtransactions and can handle a high volume of simultaneous transactions. The project's approach to hosting is comparable to how Uber and Airbnb disrupted traditional industries. Holo generates revenue by charging fees on HoloFuel transactions, supporting its ecosystem.
Holo conducted an initial community offering from March to April 2018, creating a total of 177.6 billion HOT tokens. Of that, 75% was sold to the public, and the remaining 25% was kept for the team and company, without any vesting restrictions. When HoloFuel launches, HOT can be swapped for HoloFuel at a one-to-one rate. The swapped HOT will be retained as a reserve rather than burned. HoloFuel itself has no fixed supply and uses a credit system that allows for negative balances, with its supply adjusted algorithmically to maintain price stability.
Holo secures its network without relying on global consensus like traditional blockchains. Instead, each decentralized app has its own validation rules and uses a local hash chain for cryptographic records. When data moves between nodes, random peers act as validators, checking that the data follows the rules. They share valid data through a gossip protocol and can blacklist malicious actors. The design emphasizes decentralization to avoid concentrating power, and connections between hosts and apps are end-to-end encrypted, with servers distributed globally.
HOT is available on several cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, Bitrue, ProBit Exchange, and MXC.COM. It can be traded against fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar and euro, as well as other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether, and the stablecoin Tether.
Holo is a peer-to-peer platform designed for hosting decentralized applications built with Holochain, a framework that does not rely on blockchain technology. It aims to connect the broader internet with Holochain-based apps by providing an ecosystem and marketplace where these applications are accessible to mainstream users. The network operates through hosts who contribute storage and processing power, either by running background software or using dedicated hardware like HoloPorts, and are compensated in HoloFuel, a token created for microtransactions.
In 2018, the project issued an ERC-20 token, HOT, as an IOU redeemable one-to-one for HoloFuel once it launches. The token supply was set through an initial community offering, with 177.6 billion HOT minted, of which 75% was sold publicly and 25% retained by the team. HoloFuel is still in testing, and the platform was expected to enter open alpha and beta testing by 2021.
The project was founded by Arthur Brock and Eric Harris-Braun, who began work in December 2016 under the MetaCurrency Project, drawing on their previous experience with a cooperative framework called Ceptr. Brock has a background in alternative currency systems and community tools, while Harris-Braun has decades of programming experience. Holo generates revenue by charging fees on HoloFuel transactions, with its business model focused on expanding the network of hosts and applications.
