What is Hyperlane?
Hyperlane is an interoperability layer designed to facilitate communication between different blockchain environments, including Layer 1 networks, rollups, and app-chains. Its focus is on permissionless deployment, allowing developers to connect chains without requiring approval from a central authority. The platform also offers customizable security models, which can be adapted to meet the specific requirements of individual applications, aiming to support the development of interchain applications that function across multiple networks.
The system's architecture relies on a smart contract "mailbox" installed on each connected chain. This mailbox acts as an onchain interface for sending and receiving messages, enabling cross-chain data transfer. A message transfer typically involves two transactions: one initiated on the origin chain and another executed on the destination chain to complete delivery. To strengthen security, developers can replace the default Interchain Security Module with custom configurations, helping to ensure that messages are verified as authentic according to their chosen parameters.
