Idex is a decentralized exchange that combines an order book with an automated market maker, aiming to offer both the speed of traditional exchanges and the security of DeFi. It processes trades off-chain for instant execution and settles them on-chain, reducing failed transactions and gas costs. This design also enables advanced order types like limit orders, which can be used for arbitrage. Currently live on Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain, Idex has plans to expand to layer 2 solutions and Polkadot, with future features like leverage trading.
Idex was founded by brothers Alex and Phil Wearn, with Alex serving as CEO and Phil as COO. Alex has prior experience at Amazon, IBM, and Adobe, while Phil brings a background in accounting and astronautical engineering. The team also includes CTO Brian Yennie, a software engineer with over two decades of experience. Launched in 2017, Idex raised $2.5 million in seed funding led by G1 Ventures and Borderless Capital, with participation from Collider Ventures and Gnosis.
Idex differentiates itself by merging an order book with an automated market maker. Trades are matched off-chain in real-time, then settled on-chain, which eliminates network fees for order placement and cancellation. This allows for advanced strategies like stop-loss and fill-or-kill orders. The AMM provides liquidity through virtual orders that appear alongside real ones, ensuring deep liquidity. Smart contracts handle custody and settlement, maintaining decentralization while offering a centralized exchange-like experience.
The total supply of IDEX is capped at 1 billion tokens. The distribution allocates 40% to market maker rewards and marketing, 10% to IDEX members, 25% to the team, 10% for future employees, 10% for future use, and 5% for business expenses. Additionally, users can stake their IDEX by running a lightweight node with a minimum of 10,000 tokens.
IDEX operates as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, which uses a proof-of-stake consensus where validators stake 32 ETH to secure the network. The exchange has undergone security audits by Quantstamp, a firm known for auditing projects like Maker and Compound. To date, Idex has not experienced any security breaches, highlighting its robust security measures.
The price of IDEX has seen significant volatility, rising from under $0.10 to an all-time high above $0.60 before retracting to around $0.30. Whether it can reach $1 depends on various factors, including the exchange's expansion to new blockchains and overall product improvements. While possible in the long term, such a price increase is not guaranteed and would require sustained growth and adoption.
IDEX tokens can be purchased on several cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, Uniswap V2, Gate.io, and Balancer. These platforms offer liquidity for trading IDEX against other digital assets.

It operates through an off-chain trading engine that handles order matching and execution, while trade settlement occurs on-chain. This design aims to reduce failed transactions and gas costs, while also enabling faster trade execution and support for advanced order types like limit orders.
The platform currently runs on Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain, with plans to expand to additional layer-two solutions and other blockchains in the future.
