Illuvium is an open-world fantasy battle game built on the Ethereum blockchain. The game world is inhabited by creatures called Illuvials, which players can capture after defeating them in battle. Development began in 2020, with a global team of over 40 people, including co-founders Kieran and Aaron Warwick, who are brothers and also related to Kain Warwick.

Illuvium functions more like a complete video game than a typical blockchain application. It is accessed via a desktop client, but also includes DeFi features such as yield farming and a decentralized exchange. Players explore the game world, battling Illuvials and other players, completing quests, and participating in daily challenges. They collect Illuvials, which have various attributes like class (Empath, Fighter, Guardian, Rogue, Psion) and affinity (Air, Earth, Fire, Nature, Water). These traits determine their rarity and combat effectiveness. Illuvials can gain strength through victories, be enhanced with items, and evolve into ascended forms with dual affinities. Each Illuvial is represented as a unique NFT, allowing for ownership and trading.

Illuvium stands out from other blockchain games due to its fully 3D environment and over 100 unique Illuvials, each designed by professional artists. It integrates with Immutable X, a layer-2 solution on Ethereum, enabling zero gas fees and fast transactions for NFT minting and trading. The game features a built-in DEX called IlluviDEX, where players can trade assets with a 5% fee that goes to ILV stakers. Additionally, Illuvium offers yield farming with a total supply of 3 million ILV tokens, providing rewards for participants.

sILV is a secondary in-game token in Illuvium that allows players to access their yield farming rewards before the one-year lock period ends. Instead of waiting, stakers can convert their ILV rewards to sILV, which represents the USD equivalent and can be used to purchase in-game items. However, sILV cannot be withdrawn from the game or traded on external platforms, as it is not a blockchain-based asset.

Both Illuvium and Axie Infinity involve collectible creatures that can be battled, traded, and upgraded, but they differ in scope. Illuvium is a 3D RPG with an open world and a narrative, while Axie Infinity is a 2D game with adorable Axies that can be bred, battled, and traded, but lacks a story mode. Both games incorporate DeFi elements, allowing players to earn real Ether (ETH) through gameplay, as some creatures can be valuable. Unlike Axie Infinity, which generates Axies from random asset combinations, Illuvium's Illuvials are handcrafted with unique art and characteristics.
