Kaspa is a fast, scalable Layer-1 built on proof-of-work (PoW) powered by GHOSTDAG—a novel consensus mechanism extending Nakamoto's original design. Unlike conventional blockchains discarding competing blocks, GHOSTDAG permits parallel blocks coexisting and ordering within Directed Acyclic Graphs (blockDAG), enabling elevated throughput while preserving decentralization and security. Kaspa currently processes 10 blocks per second with 100 blocks per second long-term scaling goals, offering confirmation times limited by internet latency. The Crescendo upgrade—a hardfork—successfully raised Kaspa's block rate to 10 BPS while maintaining network stability. Kaspa aims creating PoW operating at internet speed, combining proof-of-work reliability with modern application responsiveness. True to foundational principles, Kaspa is accessible and decentralized. Full nodes operate smoothly on standard PCs requiring modest hardware via efficient multithreading and secure pruning limiting disk usage while maintaining cryptographic integrity. This reflects Satoshi's original vision—decentralized networks where anyone participates completely sans specialized equipment. Layer-2 solutions undergo active development expanding Kaspa capabilities. These efforts leverage Kaspa's unique architecture, particularly its multi-leader consensus, supporting scalable applications, MEV resistance, decentralized oracles, and secure sequencing for ecosystem growth.
Dr. Yonatan Sompolinsky (Harvard University) originated Kaspa, having researched scalable proof-of-work protocols generalizing Nakamoto Consensus under Prof. Aviv Zohar (Hebrew University). DAGLabs—a Polychain Capital-funded research company founded by Sompolinsky—initiated the project. Elichai Turkel, Bitcoin Core contributor, served as DAGLabs' applied cryptographer during development. DAGLabs dissolved around Kaspa's November 2021 fair launch, transitioning to decentralized, community-led models. Global contributor groups drive ongoing Kaspa development and research. Kaspa uniquely supports elevated block rates while maintaining proof-of-work security levels. Kaspa mainnet currently runs 1 block per second. Future development will stretch capabilities—considering 10 or 100 blocks per second. Kaspa includes unique monetary policy decreasing emissions geometrically based on music's 12-note scale. Activated May 7, 2022, the chromatic phase began with 440 KAS block rewards. Block rewards halve yearly but smoothly: monthly block reward reductions by (1/2)^(1/12) factor. Consecutive-month block reward ratios exactly match consecutive tempered chromatic scale semitone frequency ratios. Initial block reward is A4 note frequency; each averaged year is an octave. The policy dictates minted coins per second regardless of block rate. Block rate changes adjust rewards maintaining identical emission rates.
