Kava is a Layer-1 blockchain designed to merge the speed and interoperability of Cosmos with the developer capabilities of Ethereum. It was created with a focus on optimizing resources for protocol growth, leveraging its Cosmos EVM technology to deliver scalability, speed, security, and developer support. Builders on Kava can earn from the Kava Rise program, which allocates a $750 million developer incentive fund. This fund is distributed on-chain, rewarding top protocols monthly based on their usage.

The Kava network prioritizes security and decentralization. Its ecosystem is developed by over 100 application protocol teams and supported by more than 100 infrastructure teams. The project is overseen by several independent international foundations, which are responsible for distributing protocol-level funding to grantees. These foundations aim to support the health and ongoing development of decentralized networks and systems.

The KAVA token was initially introduced in 2019 through a Binance Launchpad educational event. All vesting KAVA has since been unlocked. The network uses a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism that emits tokens to incentivize validators for securing the network. Additionally, a portion of the emitted tokens is allocated to initiatives such as Kava Rise, which aims to enhance the decentralization, security, and stability of the Kava ecosystem.

Kava is built on Cosmos and utilizes a Tendermint-based proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism to maintain network integrity. This system relies on validator nodes that confirm transactions, requiring them to post collateral. Validators that misbehave or fail to meet minimum requirements face penalties, encouraging honest and efficient operation. KAVA holders can run a staking node to earn rewards, but only the top 100 nodes, known as validators, are eligible. Alternatively, holders can stake through exchanges like Binance and Kraken, or wallets such as Trust Wallet and Keplr. The smart contracts have been audited by firms like CertiK, B-Harvest, and Quantstamp, with no vulnerabilities found to date.

KAVA tokens are available on more than a dozen exchanges, offering various trading pairs, with the most popular being KAVA/USDT, KAVA/BTC, and KAVA/BNB. As of March 2022, Binance provides the highest liquidity for KAVA, while Kraken is the only exchange offering KAVA/EUR and KAVA/USD pairs.
