What is Audius?
Audius is a decentralized music streaming protocol that originally operated on the POA network before migrating to Solana. It was created to address inefficiencies in the music industry, particularly around opaque music rights ownership and intermediaries that sit between artists and their audiences. The platform seeks to align the interests of artists, fans, and node operators through its native AUDIO token.
Artists can upload music at no cost, with content stored and distributed by a network of content and discovery nodes, while fans can listen for free. The platform currently supports features like weekly trending lists that reward popular creators. Future plans include integrating stablecoins for paid content and introducing artist tokens that could provide fans with access to exclusive material, potentially in collaboration with platforms like Rally. The ecosystem involves four main participants: artists, fans, content nodes, and discovery nodes, which handle content availability and metadata indexing.

Audius was founded in 2018 by Roneil Rumburg and Forrest Browning, both California-based entrepreneurs and Stanford alumni. Rumburg also co-founded Kleiner Perkins, an early-stage seed fund, while Browning is a Forbes 30 Under 30 recipient and co-founder of StacksWare. The team includes additional employees and backing from notable figures such as electronic music producer deadmau5, Stanford Crypto co-founder Adam Goldberg, and EA Games co-founder Bing Gordon. The total supply of AUDIO is 1 billion tokens, with roughly 411 million in circulation. Token distribution allocates 23% to premined rewards and airdrops, 36% to investors, and 41% to founders and the protocol. AUDIO serves purposes including network security, feature access, and governance, with staking available for node operators and other value-added services.
