Ontology is a project focused on bringing trust, privacy, and security to Web3 through decentralized identity and data solutions. It aims to provide trusted access to Web3, ensuring that users and their privacy are prioritized through regulatory compliant digital identity solutions. The Ontology blockchain is a high-speed, low-cost public chain designed to enhance privacy, transparency, and trust. It offers flexibility for users and enterprises to build blockchain-based solutions while maintaining regulatory compliance. Ontology's Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) ensures compatibility with Ethereum, paving the way for its Multi-Virtual Machine and increased interoperability. Instead of an initial coin offering (ICO), Ontology distributed its ONT tokens through community distributions and airdrops, fostering organic price discovery and community engagement.
Ontology was founded by Li Jun on November 27, 2017, with the goal of building infrastructure for trusted access to Web3, prioritizing user privacy through regulatory compliant digital identity solutions. Li Jun, who has a technical background and philosophical interests, named the project Ontology drawing from both philosophy and the Semantic Web. In philosophy, ontology studies concepts like existence and reality, while in the Semantic Web, it refers to a basic protocol. Li Jun saw this as aligning with the vision of creating a decentralized and credit-based infrastructure.
Ontology stands out by enabling businesses to build their own blockchains on top of its network, offering flexibility to create customized solutions. It is designed with interoperability in mind, supporting three virtual machines: Ontology EVM, NeoVM, and WasmVM, which facilitate cross-chain development and provide a familiar environment for builders. Additionally, Ontology focuses on user experience through tools like the ONTO Wallet, which offers cross-chain access, and ONT ID, giving users control over their identity and data. Features like ONT Login simplify registration and password management, making Web3 more accessible.
Ontology has a total coin supply of 1,000,000,000 ONT, with nearly 80% currently in circulation. At launch, the token distribution allocated 15% to the core team, 10% to the NEO council, 28% to institutional partners, 10% to the technical community, and 25% to ecosystem development. These tokens underwent a strict screening process and were subject to unlocking periods that extended until the end of October 2020, spanning over two years.
The Ontology network is fully decentralized, making it highly resistant to hacks. An attack would need to compromise more than half of the connected devices to have an impact, which is a significant barrier due to the network's distributed nature.
ONT and ONG are listed on major exchanges, including Binance and OKX, among others, making them accessible for purchase on these platforms.
Ontology is a blockchain project focused on integrating decentralized identity and data solutions into Web3. The project aims to provide secure and private access to Web3 infrastructure, with an emphasis on regulatory compliance for both individual users and enterprises. The network is designed to be high-speed and low-cost, offering flexibility for businesses to create customized blockchain solutions.
The platform supports multiple virtual machines, including an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), to ensure compatibility and interoperability. This multi-VM approach is intended to facilitate cross-chain development. The project also provides tools such as the ONTO Wallet for cross-chain access and ONT ID, which allows users to maintain control over their identity and data.
Ontology was founded by Li Jun in November 2017. The project did not hold an initial coin offering (ICO) at launch, instead distributing its ONT cryptocurrency through community airdrops. The Ontology mainnet went live on June 30, 2018. The total supply of ONT is capped at 1 billion tokens, with nearly 80% in circulation. Initial token allocations included portions for the core team, institutional partners, the technical community, and ecosystem development.
