Paycoin is a blockchain-based payment system that began as a project within Danal, a South Korean payment company. In September 2018, PayProtocol AG was set up in Switzerland to manage the project independently. It is one of the early major examples of blockchain payments in South Korea, focusing on regulatory compliance and merchant adoption. The PCI token was launched on a private blockchain using Hyperledger Fabric. In April 2019, the Paycoin app was released commercially, allowing users in South Korea to pay with PCI at real-world merchants.
Paycoin provides a global payment platform that makes it easy to use digital assets for everyday purchases. In South Korea, it is accepted at major chains like Domino's Pizza and Pizza Hut, as well as many online and offline stores. In the European Union, a Paycoin Mastercard was launched with SR Saphirstein AG, allowing users to load PCI and spend it at any Mastercard merchant, and it works with Apple Pay and Google Pay. In Southeast Asia, through a partnership with Alchemy Pay, PCI payment services are available in Vietnam and the Philippines for both online and offline transactions.
Paycoin uses Hyperledger Fabric, a permissioned blockchain framework, which means only authorized nodes can validate transactions, ensuring fast speeds and privacy. This enterprise-grade security is suitable for retail and e-commerce. Paycoin also integrates with traditional financial networks, such as launching a Mastercard debit card with SR Saphirstein AG, enabling spending at any Mastercard merchant. The system supports SWIFT, SEPA, and IBAN for broader financial connectivity.
Paycoin was developed by Danal, a leading South Korean payment solution company with over 20 years of experience. Danal is known as the first PG payment gateway to create a mobile payment solution and holds more than 50% of the Korean mobile payment market, serving 12 countries. To address high transaction fees and slow settlements, Danal integrated blockchain technology into its infrastructure, creating a service that allows real-world payments using digital assets.
Paycoin (PCI) is a blockchain-based payment project that originated as an internal initiative by Danal, a South Korean payment service provider. In September 2018, PayProtocol AG was established in Switzerland as a separate entity to further develop the project. Paycoin is recognized as one of the early examples of blockchain-based payment systems in South Korea, with a focus on merchant integration and regulatory considerations.
PayProtocol AG introduced PCI as a utility token for payment purposes on a private blockchain network built on Hyperledger Fabric. In April 2019, the Paycoin app was commercially released, allowing users in South Korea to make real-world payments with PCI. The project has since expanded its reach internationally. In the European Union, a Paycoin Mastercard was launched in partnership with SR Saphirstein AG, enabling payments at Mastercard merchants and compatibility with mobile payment services. In Southeast Asia, collaboration with Alchemy Pay brought PCI payment services to countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines. In April 2025, PCI was listed on UZNEX, a government-authorized exchange in Uzbekistan, with plans to issue a Paycoin Crypto Mastercard in the region.
The project's technology is based on Hyperledger Fabric, a permissioned blockchain framework that allows only authorized nodes to validate transactions, providing fast speeds and enhanced privacy. Paycoin aims to expand beyond payments into areas such as DeFi-linked products, rewards, and credit services, while maintaining transparency through regular updates on token circulation and company holdings.
