SHIB is a decentralized digital currency driven by its community, with a global user base. Launched on the Ethereum blockchain in late 2020, it has evolved into a widely recognized token accepted at numerous merchants, either directly or via payment processors. The project was created anonymously by an individual using the pseudonym 'Ryoshi,' who downplays their own importance and suggests that attempts to reveal their identity would be futile. The coin's popularity surged due to its charming theme and endorsements from high-profile figures, leading to its integration into the ecosystem's own decentralized exchange, ShibaSwap.
The origins of SHIB are outlined in the project's WoofPaper, which lists three motivations: starting from nothing, uniting previously unacquainted developers, and a fondness for Shiba Inu dogs. The anonymous founder, known as 'Ryoshi,' remains largely unknown, drawing comparisons to Bitcoin's creator. In personal writings, Ryoshi describes themselves as an unimportant individual and emphasizes that no single person holds accountability for the project. They claim to own zero SHIB tokens, allowing for an unbiased perspective. Speculation suggests Vitalik Buterin may have provided initial liquidity, but Ryoshi attributes this to a friend met at a conference who supplied 10 ETH for the Uniswap pair, noting the project was an experiment.
Ryoshi's goal was to test the viability of a decentralized autonomous organization without central leadership. In mid-2021, Ryoshi withdrew, leaving the token fully community-managed. The experiment proved successful, as SHIB briefly surpassed Dogecoin in market cap in October 2021. Community engagement was praised by figures like Robinhood's Christine Brown. Data from WhaleStats showed SHIB constituted over 20% of ERC-20 tokens held by major Ethereum whales, far ahead of competitors. The token also exceeded one million holders after hitting its peak. Retail adoption increased, with companies like Newegg accepting SHIB through BitPay in December 2021.
The SHIBA INU website states that 50% of the total token supply was locked on Uniswap, with the keys discarded, and the other 50% was sent to Vitalik Buterin as a burn. In response, Buterin transferred 50 trillion SHIB, then worth about $1 billion, to India's Covid Crypto Relief Fund, and subsequently burned 40% of the total supply by sending it to a dead wallet.
According to the SHIB WoofPaper, SHIB operates as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, which currently uses a proof-of-work consensus mechanism but is in the process of transitioning to proof-of-stake.
Shiba Inu can be purchased on several exchanges, including Binance, Huobi, Coinbase, Gate.io, Uniswap (V2), and OKEx. To view the live price in various fiat currencies, one can use the converter feature on the Shiba Inu page or a dedicated exchange rate converter. Common trading pairs include SHIB/USD, SHIB/GBP, SHIB/AUD, and SHIB/EUR.
Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a decentralized, community-driven digital currency operating on the Ethereum blockchain. Launched in late 2020, it was created anonymously by an individual or group using the pseudonym "Ryoshi," who has stated they hold no SHIB tokens and have since stepped away from the project, leaving it fully in the hands of its community. The initiative was framed as an experiment in decentralized organization without central leadership.
The token gained significant popularity and market value, partly due to its meme appeal and mentions from prominent figures. Its ecosystem includes a proprietary decentralized exchange called ShibaSwap. Following a price surge, SHIB briefly became the most valuable meme coin by market capitalization in October 2021, surpassing Dogecoin. Data from WhaleStats indicated that SHIB accounted for over 20% of ERC-20 tokens held by large Ethereum wallets at that time, and the token surpassed one million holders.
Adoption expanded as various merchants and platforms began accepting SHIB as payment, including through partnerships with payment processors. For instance, electronics retailer Newegg integrated SHIB via BitPay in December 2021, and hundreds of merchants reportedly accepted it through services like CoinGate. The community also made social media efforts to encourage major corporations to accept the token, though these campaigns did not achieve their goals.
