Steem is a blockchain designed for community engagement, rewarding users for their contributions. It functions as a public, incentivized database where people can post and curate content, earning cryptocurrency in return. The protocol combines elements of social media and digital currency to create a value-sharing ecosystem. The first application built on this blockchain, Steemit, was launched on July 4, 2016. The project aims to provide curated news, earning opportunities, answers to user queries, and a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar.
Ned Scott and Dan Larimer, a blockchain developer, co-founded Steem. In January, they launched Steemit, the first application built on the Steem blockchain. Steemit functions similarly to other social networks but operates on a decentralized, non-custodial blockchain, avoiding the data issues commonly found on traditional social platforms.
Unlike traditional social media companies that profit from user content, Steem rewards its users for their contributions. It is the first blockchain-based social platform, ensuring decentralization, non-custodial control, and secure data without downtime or abuse. Users are paid in cryptocurrency for their participation. The guiding principle is that contributors should be compensated, similar to startups allocating shares. Additionally, Steem aims to provide financial services and opportunities to its community.
Steem's token economics differ from mining-based blockchains. New STEEM coins are primarily distributed through a rewards pool, with the majority going to content creators and curators. Specifically, 75% of new coins go to authors and curators, 15% to users holding Steem Power, and 10% to witnesses who produce blocks. The network also has two other cryptocurrencies: Steem Dollars (SBD) and Steem Power (SP).
After Justin Sun's acquisition, Steem underwent operational changes, eliminating proof-of-work. Instead, the network uses delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS) to enhance transaction speed and scalability. Witnesses are scheduled to create blocks every three seconds and are rewarded with Steem Power for their efforts.
Steem tokens, Steem Power, and Steem Dollars can be purchased on various cryptocurrency exchanges. Users without an account can buy STEEM through platforms like Binance. Additionally, STEEM and SBD can be traded for Bitcoin, which can then be converted to fiat currencies.

STEEM is the primary token of the protocol, with new coins distributed daily through a rewards pool. Content curators and authors receive 75% of newly created coins, users holding Steem Power receive 15%, and witnesses, who create blocks every three seconds, receive the remaining 10%. The network also issues two additional tokens: Steem Dollars, which is pegged to the US dollar, and Steem Power. Following a restructuring after the platform was acquired by Justin Sun, the network no longer uses proof-of-work but instead employs delegated proof-of-stake to enhance transaction speed and scalability.
