Stratis Group Ltd. was established in 2016 by Chris Trew, who aimed to create a blockchain platform tailored for enterprise use. Trew chose to build on the Bitcoin protocol, anticipating its long-term dominance and continuous improvements. His prior experience included a decade in enterprise IT across various sectors, including legal, aviation, and finance, as well as running an online marketing business. He also contributed as a volunteer developer to projects like Blitz and The Viral Exchange before founding Stratis.
Stratis differentiates itself by offering a Blockchain-as-a-Service platform that lets enterprises deploy private sidechains linked to its main chain. This setup allows for customized solutions without the drawbacks of managing an independent network or relying on major blockchains like Bitcoin or Ethereum. The platform supports smart contracts, dApps, and privacy tools. Stratis has partnered with notable firms such as Microsoft and has sponsored athletes for promotion. Its 2020 upgrade introduced a new chain and updated development plans.
Stratis initially issued 98 million STRAT tokens, with 84 million sold in its 2016 ICO, which raised 915 BTC. The remaining tokens were allocated to the team, advisors, and bounties. In 2020, a token swap converted STRAT to STRAX at a 1:1 ratio, with an additional 25 million STRAX minted for various purposes, including the foundation and incentivization. New STRAX is generated through proof-of-stake, with a block reward of 18 STRAX, leading to an annual inflation rate near 10%.
Stratis uses a proof-of-stake consensus where staking more STRAX increases the chance of validating blocks, aligning users' interests with network security. Cold staking was introduced in 2020, allowing participation from offline wallets, potentially increasing security. SegWit activation also enhances security by preventing transaction ID malleability. Although Stratis is a private company, its code is open source for community review.
STRAX is available on exchanges like Binance, Upbit, and Bithumb. It can be traded against fiat currencies, major cryptocurrencies, and stablecoins.
Stratis Group Ltd., the company behind the Stratis platform, was established in 2016 by Chris Trew. Trew's goal was to create an enterprise-focused blockchain platform, which he believed was lacking in the industry at the time. He chose to build on the Bitcoin protocol, anticipating that Bitcoin would become a dominant force in the crypto space and that its codebase would see continuous improvements. Prior to founding Stratis, Trew had a background in enterprise IT, having taught himself C# and spent a decade in various IT roles across legal, aviation, public sector, and financial institutions like Barclays. He also ran an internet marketing and SEO business and volunteered as a developer for projects such as Blitz and The Viral Exchange.
The Stratis BaaS platform, as described in its whitepaper, is designed for financial service providers and enterprises to test, develop, and deploy blockchain applications without the overhead and security issues of running their own networks. It offers permissioned, private sidechains that interact with its primary chain, along with hosting for decentralized applications, smart contracts, and privacy and identity tools. The company has announced partnerships with firms like Microsoft, International Data Corporation, and MediConnect, and has sponsored athletes to raise platform awareness.
Stratis launched its initial STRAT token with a total supply of 98 million, with 84 million sold during an ICO that ended in July 2016, raising 915 BTC. In October 2020, a token swap converted STRAT to STRAX at a one-to-one ratio, with 25 million new STRAX minted for various allocations. New STRAX is generated through a proof-of-stake process, with each block producing 18 STRAX, half going to the block producer and half to the Cirrus sidechain. The network's security relies on PoS, where nodes stake STRAX to validate blocks, with higher stakes increasing the chance of block creation.
