Symbol (XYM) is a blockchain platform that launched in March 2021, positioned as a continuation of an earlier project. It introduces a consensus mechanism called proof-of-stake-plus (PoS+), along with features such as rule-based tokens known as mosaics, namespaces, multisignature accounts, and aggregate transactions. The platform has a dedicated following in Japan and Korea, with its community active on platforms like Twitter, LINE, and KakaoTalk. Notable projects built on Symbol include a bounty and tipping system for creators, a loyalty and rewards card for businesses, an on-chain media and content storage service, and an NFT marketplace tailored for Japanese users.
In November 2021, a pseudonymous group of cryptocurrency developers forked Symbol, naming the new chain Cyprus. This hard fork aimed to evolve Symbol into an omnichain platform with scalable, content-specific shards. The project seeks to address perceived limitations in EVM-based systems and existing omnichain solutions, particularly issues around network-wide security, centralized L2 validators, and decision-making controlled by central client teams rather than a market-driven approach.
