What is TerraUSD Classic?
TerraUSD Classic (USTC) is the remnant of the original UST, an algorithmic stablecoin that operated on the first version of the Terra blockchain. Instead of relying on cash reserves, it maintained its intended one-dollar value through a mint-and-burn process tied to the LUNA token.
In May 2022, this mechanism collapsed. UST lost its peg, and as the protocol attempted to stabilize it, the LUNA supply underwent massive inflation, erasing a substantial amount of value within a short period. Following the incident, the blockchain was forked, and the original asset was rebranded with the "Classic" designation.

Currently, USTC does not function as a stablecoin and its market price remains well below one dollar. It represents a speculative asset linked to a failed system rather than a reliable substitute for fiat currency.
