What is Virtuals Protocol?
Virtuals Protocol is a platform introduced in 2024 that allows users to create, tokenize, and monetize AI agents for gaming, entertainment, and virtual environments without needing technical skills. Initially operating on Ethereum's Base Layer 2 network, it expanded to Ethereum mainnet, Solana, and Ronin by 2025. The VIRTUAL token functions as the base liquidity pair and transaction currency for agent interactions throughout the ecosystem.
The protocol uses a bonding curve system, where creating a new AI agent costs 100 VIRTUAL. Users can trade agent tokens until a threshold of 42,000 VIRTUAL is reached, at which point the agent moves to a permanent liquidity pool paired with VIRTUAL. These AI agents support text, speech, and 3D animation, and can autonomously manage on-chain wallets. Examples include Luna, an AI vocalist with over 500,000 TikTok followers. The GAME framework enables agents to process inputs, generate responses, and retain memory of past interactions.

Founded by Jansen Teng and Weekee Tiew, the project evolved from PathDAO, a gaming guild started in 2021 that shifted focus to AI agents in January 2024. The team secured $16 million in seed funding led by DeFiance Capital and Beam. In 2025, partnerships were announced with Animoca Brands, as well as a collaboration with Zyfai and BasisOS for an Agentic Fund of Funds. Users can stake VIRTUAL to obtain veVIRTUAL for DAO governance and may receive airdrops of agent tokens. Fees paid in VIRTUAL generate protocol revenue, which funds periodic buybacks and burns, reducing the token's supply over time.
