Lava Network is a protocol designed to coordinate blockchain traffic, specifically focusing on RPC requests, which are fundamental to interactions like sending transactions or checking wallet balances. It aggregates data providers and routes traffic based on their speed and reliability. The network already supports daily use by over one million users across more than 40 chains, with onchain revenue exceeding one million dollars, contributed by projects such as NEAR, Starknet, Filecoin, and Axelar.
The system relies on a global, distributed network of independent RPC providers, including established entities and individual node operators. This structure aims to ensure uptime and reliability while helping smaller or newer chains establish infrastructure quickly. Beyond RPC services, Lava also supports indexed data and offers integrations with common frameworks like web3.js, ethers.js, and viem, with potential extensions for AI agent development kits, enabling peer-to-peer and permissionless multi-chain access.
Adding new chains or services to Lava is open-source and permissionless, requiring contributors to define specifications via JSON files. Participants in the network include providers who stake LAVA to offer services, validators who secure the blockchain, and consumers such as dapps or wallets that can purchase subscriptions. Tools provided by Lava include a software development kit with a badge system to protect private keys in front-end applications, a server kit for handling high-throughput requests, and an analytics page for tracking supported chains and provider metrics.
