What is WalletConnect?
WalletConnect is a decentralized network designed to facilitate connections between blockchain applications and digital wallets. According to its project materials, the network has facilitated over 185 million onchain connections for more than 30 million users across 50,000 app projects, and continues to support over 22 million monthly connections. It is described as an open ecosystem that aims to improve user experience for onchain interactions.
The WalletConnect Token (WCT) is intended to play a central role within this network. Its planned functions include paying for network services such as relay usage, rewarding participants who help maintain network security and efficiency, and enabling staking for rewards and governance. Token holders are expected to vote on proposals and network changes, with governance and fee features slated to be unlocked in the near term. The token is set to launch on Optimism's OP Mainnet.

The initial supply of WCT is capped at 1 billion tokens, with allocations designed to support network growth. The current tokenomics model does not include inflation as a distribution mechanism, though future adjustments remain possible through governance. The project was initially developed by WalletConnect Inc., founded by Pedro Gomes, and now involves multiple contributors, including the WalletConnect Foundation, Reown, Consensys, and others. WCT is expected to enter its first release cycle in 2024, with token transferability to be enabled at a later date.
