Worldcoin's goal is to create a global identity and financial network that is owned by everyone. It uses World ID, a privacy-focused identity system that lets people prove they are human without revealing personal details. To get a World ID, users download the World App and visit a device called the Orb, which scans their eyes to confirm they are unique. Once verified, users can claim free WLD tokens regularly. The project aims to distribute WLD widely, potentially making it the most widely held digital currency. Note that WLD is not available in the US.
Worldcoin was founded by Sam Altman, Alex Blania, and Max Novendstern, though Novendstern left the project in July 2021. Altman is well-known as the CEO of OpenAI and former president of Y Combinator. The project's early research and development were carried out by Tools for Humanity and other partners. Worldcoin has raised over 250 million dollars from investors such as a16z, Khosla Ventures, Bain Capital Crypto, Blockchain Capital, and Tiger Global.
Worldcoin aims to create a large-scale identity and financial network, with most tokens given to individuals just for being human. World ID lets people prove they are real and unique to various platforms, helping with fair token distributions and reducing bots. It could also support democratic processes and potential AI-funded universal basic income. During its pre-launch phase, over two million people from more than 30 countries verified at an Orb. At launch, the project plans to deploy 1,500 Orbs across 35 cities in 20 countries.
Worldcoin's initial total supply is 10 billion WLD, capped for the first 15 years. After that, governance may introduce inflation up to 1.5% per year, but the default is 0%. The tokens are allocated as follows: 75% to the community, 9.8% to the initial development team, 13.5% to investors, and 1.7% to a reserve. The foundation aims to give at least 60% of all tokens as user grants. For current circulation details, refer to on-chain data.
The WLD token is deployed on Ethereum Mainnet and bridged to the Optimism layer 2 network, so it benefits from the security of both blockchains. This setup leverages Ethereum's strong security and Optimism's scalability.
Worldcoin is a project focused on creating a global identity and financial network intended to function as a public utility. Its system is built around World ID, a privacy-preserving identity network that allows users to verify their humanness online while protecting their privacy through zero-knowledge proofs. To participate, individuals download the World App and visit a physical imaging device called the Orb to get verified. The Orb uses multispectral sensors to confirm humanness and uniqueness, and images are typically deleted on-device unless users consent to data custody.
The project issues WLD, an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, with user grants delivered on the Optimism network. The token is designed as a utility token with governance properties, potentially enabling both one-token-one-vote and one-person-one-vote mechanisms. The community is expected to determine additional uses, such as payments within wallet apps or signaling support for initiatives. The project's stated goal is to distribute tokens widely to individuals simply for being human, contrasting with many other crypto projects.

During its pre-launch phase, which ran from May 2021 to July 2023, more than two million people across over 30 countries verified at an Orb.
