XDC Network is a blockchain tailored for trade finance and the tokenization of real-world assets. It is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine and employs a Delegated Proof of Stake consensus mechanism to ensure security, fast processing, and scalability. The network includes a Layer-2 subnet system that allows for the creation of independent, privacy-focused side chains that benefit from the mainnet's security, catering to entities like governments and financial institutions that require custom blockchain environments. As of January 6, 2025, there are over 300 validator candidates, with 108 active validators and the rest as standby, each staking 10 million XDC. In Q4 2024, the mainnet upgraded to XDC 2.0, which introduced enhanced Byzantine fault tolerance and a forensics monitoring system.
XDC Network was created by XinFin, a Singapore-based fintech firm founded in 2017 by Ritesh Kakkad and Atul Khekade. The XDC mainnet launched in 2019. Kakkad is an experienced tech entrepreneur with a background in cloud computing, while Khekade, a computer engineer, previously led the development of a permissioned blockchain for Indian banks at MonetaGo. Their goal was to build an enterprise-focused blockchain for global trade finance. They later brought on André Casterman, a former SWIFT executive with over two decades of experience, to lead innovation and drive adoption of the network in traditional finance.
XDC Network distinguishes itself through its active community and its focus on real-world assets and trade finance. It was the first blockchain invited to join the Trade Finance Distribution Initiative, a group of major banks addressing the trade finance gap, and also joined the ITFA's Digital Negotiable Instruments Initiative. In late 2021, Tradeteq issued the first trade finance NFT on XDC, and in 2023, the network launched USTY, a token representing shares in a U.S. Treasury bond ETF, developed with Tradeteq and Securitize. Additionally, SBI Holdings partnered with TradeFinex to expand XDC's use in trade finance and cross-border transactions.
The XDC Network is a blockchain platform designed for trade finance and the tokenization of real-world assets. It is an EVM-compatible network that uses a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism to achieve security, fast transaction processing, and scalability. The network includes a Layer-2 subnet system that enables the creation of independent side chains with customizable permissions and privacy features, while still relying on the mainnet's security. This architecture is intended to serve entities such as government agencies, financial institutions, and businesses that require dedicated blockchain environments.
As of early January 2025, the network had over 300 validator masternode candidates, with 108 operating as active validators and the rest on standby. Each masternode operator must stake 10 million XDC. In the fourth quarter of 2024, the mainnet was upgraded to XDC 2.0, which introduced enhanced Byzantine fault tolerance and a forensics monitoring system into the consensus mechanism. This upgrade was developed by a protocol team led by Professor Pramod Viswanath from Princeton University.
The network was launched by XinFin, a Singapore-based fintech company founded in 2017 by Ritesh Kakkad and Atul Khekade. The mainnet went live in 2019. The founders aimed to create an enterprise-focused blockchain for global trade finance. Notable developments include the network's participation in trade finance initiatives and the issuance of a compliant U.S. Treasury token in 2023. The network also works with platforms like TradeTrust to support digital trade documents.
