What is Boundless?
Boundless is a protocol designed to provide zero-knowledge (ZK) capabilities to various blockchain networks. It allows independent prover nodes to generate ZK proofs for layer 1s, applications, rollups, and other infrastructure. By moving computation to the Boundless network and verifying proofs on-chain, it aims to offer scalability and interoperability without requiring changes to existing systems.
Founded in 2022 by RISC Zero, the protocol addresses the limitation where each node must re-execute transactions. Instead, Boundless shifts to a model of proof-based verification, which can increase capacity. It is not a blockchain itself, but rather a shared proving layer that deploys smart contracts to major networks. This approach avoids fragmentation and security trade-offs of launching a new chain, while inheriting the liveness and security of the networks it serves.

Prover nodes execute workloads off-chain, generate proofs, and submit them for on-chain verification at low gas costs. These proofs are backed by the ZKC token, which prover nodes post as collateral, creating an economic guarantee of delivery. The protocol launched with 1 billion tokens at genesis. Inflation begins at 7% in the first year and decreases to a fixed 3% by year eight, with 75% of emissions directed to provers and 25% to stakers. Potential uses include rollups transitioning to ZK validity proofs, DeFi protocols running complex calculations off-chain, and cross-chain messaging systems.
