Kazakhstan's Crypto Market Hits Major Milestone
Kazakhstan's regulated cryptocurrency market has experienced explosive growth, expanding more than 30-fold in just three years to surpass $10 billion in transaction volume. Officials in Astana revealed the striking figures this week, underscoring the Central Asian nation's rapid emergence as a regional digital-asset hub.
The transaction volume, which stood at $320 million in 2023, climbed to $10.5 billion by the end of 2025 — and has continued rising since. Data presented by Yerkegali Yedenbayev, managing director of the Astana Financial Services Authority (AFSA), showed the market reached $5.5 billion in the first half of 2026 alone.
"Thus, the regulated market has grown more than 30-fold in a short period," Yedenbayev said during a government meeting on Tuesday.
Customer Base Expands Rapidly
The surge in transaction activity has been matched by a sharp increase in participation. The number of clients in Kazakhstan's regulated crypto sector rose from 53,000 in 2023 to 270,000 today, according to AFSA data.
Officials also noted that Kazakhstanis hold approximately 1 million cryptocurrency wallets worldwide — a figure Astana hopes to partially repatriate through regulatory incentives and domestically licensed platforms.
Tax Exemption Aims to Draw Crypto Holders Home
In August, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree granting a generous tax exemption to private crypto owners. The measure, prepared with input from the AIFC, the digital ministry, and the central bank, relieves digital-asset investors from personal income taxation on gains from coin-related transactions.
The policy is designed to encourage citizens to move holdings from foreign exchanges to regulated domestic venues, strengthening Kazakhstan's position as a compliant crypto jurisdiction.
Licensing Framework Gains Momentum
Kazakhstan adopted its "On Digital Assets" law in 2023 and revised it this spring to allow service providers to operate beyond the AIFC's narrow legal regime. Under the updated framework, three crypto exchange operators have been licensed, according to Timur Suleimenov, Chairman of the National Bank of Kazakhstan (NBK).
Another five companies are currently pursuing licenses — a mix of international platforms preparing to enter the local market, AFSA's chief indicated.
The three active exchanges have generated combined turnover of approximately 2 billion tenge (almost $4.5 million) in their first two months of licensed operations, Suleimenov noted.
Regional Hub Ambitions Take Shape
Kazakhstan's regulatory progress has attracted major industry players. Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, selected the country to establish a dedicated hub for international settlements and money transfers serving the entire region.
The center is expected to process cross-border transactions for customers across the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Eastern European markets, reinforcing Kazakhstan's ambition to become a true Eurasian cryptocurrency hub.
Suleimenov also highlighted that the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange (KASE) has been designated as a digital-asset operator. Its platform has facilitated 34,000 deals worth 20.5 billion tenge ($45 million) for exchange-traded funds tracking BTC, along with 650 trades totaling 1 billion tenge for other crypto ETFs.
From Mining Powerhouse to Regulated Market
Kazakhstan first gained global crypto recognition after climbing into the top three mining destinations following China's 2021 ban on the activity. While the influx of miners initially caused energy deficits, authorities addressed the issue by cracking down on illegal Bitcoin farms and restricting power consumption.
The government then pivoted toward regulation, permitting trading through AIFC-registered providers and implementing what the NBK Chair described as the region's first comprehensive regulatory framework for the crypto market.
Coinasity's Take
Kazakhstan's transformation from an unregulated mining hub to a structured digital-asset jurisdiction offers a compelling template for emerging markets. The combination of tax incentives, a clear licensing regime, and infrastructure development through KASE signals serious institutional commitment. However, the relatively modest turnover from licensed exchanges — around $4.5 million in two months — suggests the regulated market is still in its early stages compared to the $10 billion in overall transaction volume.
The real test will be whether the tax exemption successfully repatriates holdings from foreign platforms and whether incoming international exchanges can scale operations meaningfully. For now, Kazakhstan is positioning itself as a serious contender in the Eurasian crypto landscape.
